The Weekly Bulli-tin
Term 3 Week 5
Principal's Report
Bullying No Way – National Week of Action
This week, we recognise Bullying No Way – National Week of Action, an important opportunity for our whole school community to come together and reaffirm our shared commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and respectful environment where every student feels valued, supported and empowered to say “no way” to bullying.
The week provides an opportunity to reinforce the values that underpin our school community: respect, kindness, inclusion, empathy and looking out for one another. Preventing bullying is not something that happens during one week—it is an ongoing commitment that involves every student, staff member and family.
As a school, we continue to focus on creating an environment where every child feels safe, valued and supported. We encourage students to speak up when something does not feel right, seek help from a trusted adult, and be active bystanders who support others rather than standing by when someone is being treated unfairly.
An important part of our work this year has been reviewing and developing our Anti-Bullying Policy for 2027. This work is helping us ensure that our approach provides clear and consistent processes for preventing, identifying and responding to bullying, while strengthening the support available to students.
We are also continuing to promote Stymie as an additional way for students to report concerns. Stymie provides students with a safe and accessible platform to anonymously report bullying, wellbeing concerns or other issues they may be experiencing or witnessing. It is an important tool that gives students another way to seek support and let us know when something is not right.
The review of our Anti-Bullying Policy is also an opportunity to strengthen our shared understanding of what bullying is, how concerns can be reported, how students are supported, and the role we all play in creating a safe and respectful school environment.
As we look towards 2027, we will continue to build on this work and strengthen our approach to student wellbeing and positive relationships. Bullying No Way – National Week of Action reminds us that creating a safe, inclusive and respectful school is a shared responsibility—one that we demonstrate through our words and actions every day.
Big Picture Student Panel – Learning from Student Experience
Last Friday, we were pleased to welcome parents and members of our school community to Bulli High School for a Big Picture student panel featuring students from Sydney Secondary College, Blackwattle Bay Campus.
The students generously shared their experiences of Big Picture Learning and provided an authentic insight into the opportunities, challenges and benefits of this approach to education. Hearing directly from students was particularly valuable, as they were able to speak honestly about how Big Picture has influenced their engagement, independence, confidence and ownership of their learning.
The panel reinforced the value of providing different approaches to learning for students. For some young people, a more personalised, interest-driven learning environment can provide the engagement and sense of purpose they need to thrive.
We thank the students from Blackwattle Bay Campus for sharing their experiences and the parents who attended and engaged in the discussion. The morning provided a valuable opportunity for families to learn more about Big Picture Learning and consider whether this pathway may be a good fit for their child.
If you are interested in learning more about Big Picture at Bulli High School for Years 9 and 10 in 2027, please contact the school and complete an Expression of Interest (EOI). We encourage families who are interested in this approach to get in touch and find out more about the program and how it may support their child’s learning journey.
Drawn Together – Exhibition This Weekend
A reminder that Drawn Together, our creative collaboration between Bulli High School Year 10 Visual Design students and Kindergarten students from Stanwell Park Public School, opens at Clifton School of Arts this weekend.
The exhibition showcases the collaborative artworks created by students who worked together without initially meeting, making this a wonderful celebration of creativity, connection and community.
The exhibition is open to the general public on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August. We encourage families and members of our school community to drop in, view the students’ work and support this wonderful partnership.
We would love to see you there!

HSIE @ Bulli
Head Teacher Report
It has been an intense season so far for Team HSIE.
There have already been many ups and downs, including many MVP performances, major injuries to key players and some incredible winning streaks as we work our way up the ladder.
2026 has seen some of our major signings from previous seasons continuing to strengthen their market value.
Mrs Wilkinson stepped into the HT role again last term and wore the captain's armband with pride and her usual diligence.
There were no doubts regarding how she would perform as she is already a leader each and every week.
An absolute star who has shone for team HSIE since her arrival a few years ago. Below is a full team review of the rest of the crew as we have now well and truly passed the halfway mark of the season:
Mr Ansen has had one of his strongest starts to a year in recent memory.
He has pushed his game into the whole school market as an SRC coordinator.
He tops the stats list in terms of classroom management initiatives, and his effort and application is appreciated by teammates and fans alike.
A truly dedicated young Geographer who may have other teams looking to sign the superstar in the summertime. I am confident of keeping him in Room 11 for a while, though.
Mrs Dal Molin and Mrs McCann have yet again formed a strong partnership in the middle of the pack. They consistently direct traffic and organise the team incredibly effectively.
They have picked up multiple MVP awards to start the season and we can expect many more before the end of the year.
Their ability to play off each other without even speaking is all ‘class’ (pun always intended), and you would think they have some type of telepathy going on.
Really though, it is just hard work, attention to detail and an unmatched drive to succeed.
They lead the stats in ‘early resource creation’ so far this year and I can’t see them dropping from top spot.
The highlight so far has to be grinding out a very tough win with the PIP submissions for Year 12 Society and Culture.
An absolute herculean effort that saw Ms Powell combine brilliantly down the flanks to ensure victory.
There were some seriously shaky moments along the way, but as always, they came through with the goods.
Mr Davidson has to be one of the signings of the 2026 season
He was drafted into the HSIE team very late on in 2025 but has not looked back. He has brought flair and creativity to a side that is already packed with talent.
His best performance of the season so far was late on in the assessment period last term, when Year 9 were quickly running out of steam.
Mr Davison broke the line (with a clever dummy featuring book work) and delivered a brilliant use of technology to help Year 9 Geography across the line.
He summarised the entire set of Geography skills into one fantastic film for each student to use in the lead up to their exam, to close out Semester 2. He has started just as well with the Junior History course and is constantly justifying his hefty price tag.
Mrs Fraser continues to be the teams X Factor.
She often plays off the cuff in order to keep the students guessing and hits them with the old Frazzle Dazzle.
Her passion and team spirit are always on full display.
Playing what is in front of her this season has remained her strength, often surprising herself in the process.
Ms. Hicks continues to play multiple positions across the park, and her cover defense has been second to none in 2026.
Her versatility has kept us moving forward as a team when things looked a bit shaky, and we were all out on our feet.
One of her performances of the year so far was being able to put together our ANZAC ceremony with limited prep time.
While this was much earlier on in the season, it is definitely worth mentioning. She has a huge test ahead of her as she once again assumes rep honours as Year 12 Year Advisor.
Leads the statistics in terms of ‘positions covered’ so far.
Mr Tighe is another of our young superstars who continues to mix it up in the big leagues with players who have twice the experience.
Brash, confident and driven to succeed, Mr Tighe has single handedly made Economics cool again.
The fans generally go crazy when Mr Tighe has the whiteboard marker in hand and who can blame them?
Mr Berwick is the wily veteran in 2026.
He has had a strong season so far and his consistency is what has lead to a lot of success in the first half of the season.
His talent for writing and its associated components is ‘Alarmingly’ good.
He does not show much emotion, but his constant sighs at breaktime give us all the comfort the team needs to push on.
Loves playing with a rigid structure and a scaffold to get him through game day. Absolutely loathes a risky play and a dirty playing surface meaning Room 8 is usually pristine.
Visiting teams have often felt the wrath of a lurking Berwick after leaving a mess behind.
Mrs Powell continues to go about her business quietly in the background until she burst through the line to combine for the PIP submission.
She is the type of player who is vital to every team but who won’t seek out the plaudits or wear flashy, iced out necklaces to show off her ‘class’.
A very talented teacher who leads the stats for ‘number of students mentored’, underlining her impact.
All jokes aside, a big thank you to the HSIE faculty for a remarkable first half of the year and early Term 3.
We have set our goals and worked hard to reach them together so that our students are able to achieve their potential. We hope you enjoy a little snapshot of what has been happening recently at the Humanities end of the school.
Year 10 Commerce Excursion: Justice & Police Museum
Last term, Year 10 Commerce students attended an excursion to the Justice & Police Museum as part of their study of Law in Action.
Set within a historic police station and courthouse, students explored how laws are developed, implemented and enforced in NSW, and examined how legislation has evolved to reflect changing societal values.
A highlight of the day was a mock trial, in which students took on the roles of court officials to work through the procedures of a Local Court hearing involving a drink-driving or prohibited drug case.
The excursion gave students valuable hands-on insight into the NSW legal system, directly supporting outcomes from the Commerce syllabus.
AI: Friend of Foe?
Platforms such as Claude and ChatGPT have changed the education game in a number of ways.
As teachers, we often focus on the negatives of these platforms and how they can impact the development of our students.
Despite these concerns I forced myself to remove my cynical hat and look at what AI could do FOR us.
To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement as it has been fantastic in multiple ways including resource creation, differentiation, resource adjustment, scaffolding, program building and so much more.
One example of the power of AI (Claude specifically for the example below) has been improving the engagement of my students through unique approaches to content delivery.
Last term I chose to experiment with some content in Year 12 Legal Studies, specifically looking at Human Rights and the roles of two International Courts (ICJ and the ICC).
Normally I would present this content as a table or reading with a direct comparison of the two courts.
This time I asked ‘Claude’ to create an engaging role play script that put the two International Courts into the roles of two superstar boxes who were fighting for supremacy.
What it produced was funny, engaging and most of all effective. Below is a small snippet of the script:
Year 12 – Use Any Study Technique That Works
As we get closer and closer to the final HSC exams, Year 12 students should be ramping up their preparation for each of their subjects.
The above images are of two different study ‘props’ for the Year 12 Legal Studies class.
One represents a key case in Consumer Law called Donoghue v Stevenson 1932 regarding a decomposing snail in a bottle of ginger beer.
This case set an important precedent that meant manufacturers had a duty of care to consumers to provide them with products that were safe and appropriate.
The second ‘prop’ is a poster that links the main Consumer Law legislation (the ACL) to the knee ligament with the same acronym.
A ridiculous comparison that is meant to consolidate this key law in the minds of Year 12 Legal Studies students.
While the above props were meant more as jokes to lighten the mood during a stressful period, it is vital that students find the right method of study that suits them.
Syllabus study notes are non-negotiable, as are the completion of past HSC papers. Some other techniques include:
1. Cutting up each syllabus into strips and reordering it based off memory.
2. Turn each syllabus dot point into a question and use these questions to recall content. Here is a Legal Studies example from the start of the Crime topic:
3. Using the space around your home (with permission) to stick up bits of important content e.g. quotes for English, cases for Legal Studies, timelines for History etc. Using a space that you are constantly in may allow you to form a visual connection to the information and commit it to memory more easily.
4. ‘Content Dumps’ based on a practise question either individually or with classmates. This can be done on a Word document or on a big bit of butchers’ paper.
5. Recording yourself going over your study notes and listening to the information back.
7T and 7E History
This term, Year 7 History students traded textbooks for toothpicks as they took part in a hands-on archaeological excavation using chocolate chip cookies to simulate a real dig.
The activity was designed to help students understand the patience and precision required in archaeology.
Each student was given a cookie representing a "site" and a toothpick as their only excavation tool.
Their task: carefully remove as many chocolate chips ("artefacts") as possible without breaking them or damaging the surrounding cookie ("soil layers").
Far from being just a sweet treat, the exercise taught real archaeological principles. Students learned why archaeologists work slowly and methodically, why the location and depth of a find matters just as much as the find itself, and how easily evidence can be destroyed by careless digging.
Many students quickly discovered that going in fast wrecked both the chips and the cookie, a lesson that mirrors why real excavations can take archaeologists months or even years to complete.
By the end of the lesson, students had a much stronger appreciation for the skill, patience, and care that goes into real-world archaeological work along with a well-earned snack once the "dig" was complete.
The activity ties directly into Year 7's History unit on ancient societies, reinforcing how archaeologists uncover evidence of the past and use it to build our understanding of history.
Summing Up
As always, thank you for your continued support of the Humanities at Bulli High School.
We hope you enjoyed the brief snapshot of what has been happening across the last few months.

Illawarra U16 Rugby 7 Champs
Our Under 16 Boys Rugby 7s team competed at the Regional Tournament, finishing the day undefeated.
Their outstanding performance has secured qualification for the NSWRU Secondary School State Championship, which will be held on the Central Coast in a few weeks' time.
This is yet another outstanding achievement for this talented group of boys, who have excelled in every competition they have entered this year.
We congratulate them on their continued success and wish them all the best as they prepare to compete at the State Championships.
Under 16 Girls Rugby 7s
Our Under 16 Girls Rugby 7s team represented the school with great determination and sportsmanship at the Regional Tournament.
Despite finishing the day with one win, one draw and two losses, the girls showed tremendous resilience, particularly after a number of injuries left the team without any interchange players for the remainder of the competition.
They continued to compete with courage and never stopped supporting one another, demonstrating the teamwork, commitment and positive attitude that made the school proud.
Run Beyond Project
Jemima, Billie and Zofia took on the challenge of completing a 10km run in Wollongong over the weekend as part of their journey through the Run Beyond Project.
Their achievement is a fantastic example of resilience, perseverance and commitment.
Alongside their training, Jemima, Billie, Zofia and Bridie have worked hard to raise an incredible $2,500+ combined through generous sponsorship from family and friends, as well as weekly bake sales at school.
We are incredibly proud of their dedication and the positive impact they are making both on and off the track! A special thank you to our dedicated teachers Zoe, Heather & Jenny for their incredible support, encouragement and guidance throughout this journey.

HPGE Masterclass
Another fantastic HPGE Masterclass comes to a close, featuring our brilliant CoS superstars and the incredible Mr Brady. Select students from across our CoS took part in the second day of the Arts HPGE Masterclass, this time with a focus on Music.
At the start of the day some of our students had not played an instrument at any point in their young lives, but by the time 2pm rolled around almost the entire group was performing in front of our very impressed Principal. We had singers, drummers, piano players and so much more.
Each time we get to host students from our CoS we are blown away by the talent, enthusiasm, confidence and love of learning on display.
Each and every student is an incredible ambassador for their respective schools and it is a pleasure to work with them.
A huge thank you to Mr Brady for his incredible Music program that engaged students from start to finish.
We have one more day left in the Arts Masterclass next week and we hope that these young stars will have found value in every moment.
As you will see in one of the accompanying photos the students already seem to be making themselves at home with four of the boys establishing themselves as kings of the BHS castle.
