More than 3,100 first-grade students from 36 elementary schools participated in the second annual LCPS Together in Remembrance event. The initiative honored Memorial Day through service, learning and community partnerships.

The students, working alongside older student buddies, veterans, staff and volunteers, assembled wooden American flags from kits provided by veteran-owned Flags of Valor. Flags were displayed in schools, donated to veterans or taken home to honor the holiday.

With support from partners including AFCOM Potomac Chapter, Salesforce, HITT and others, materials were delivered to schools across the county. Curriculum from Teaching and Learning guided classroom discussions on the history and meaning of Memorial Day.

The event reflects LCPS’ commitment to civic learning and meaningful student experiences that connect classroom content to real-world service.

Grading and Assessment Policy 5030 in School Year 2025/26 Grading and Assessment Policy 5030 in School Year 2025/26

After a long development and feedback process about the lack of clarity in Policy 5030 - Assessment and Grading, the Loudoun County School Board adopted an updated policy on April 8. The newly adopted policy will take effect with the start of the 2025/26 school year.

LCPS staff is updating Regulation 5030 and developing a handbook of information for teachers to guide their interpretation and ensure consistency across the school system. This information will be shared with LCPS educators prior to the start of the 2025/26 school year.

Significant updates to the policy include:

  • Definitions are included for terms like “reasonable effort” and “formative” or “summative” assessments to ensure families and staff have a consistent understanding of key terms.

  • The floor of 50% has been changed to apply only to quarter grades, not individual assessments. The floor of 50% also no longer applies to Advanced Placement courses.

  • Students must submit homework and other formative assessments, demonstrating reasonable effort, before any major summative assessment may be re-administered.

  • The ceiling of 80% for reassessments has been lowered to 70%. Students may only take a reassessment when they have received a grade of below 70% on a major summative assessment and may earn up to a grade of 70% on the reassessment.

  • The policy now allows for weighting for homework and formative assessments of a total of no more than 10% of a quarter grade.

Learn more information about the feedback received and the policy development process in the Fall 2024 Feedback Report and in this Grading and Assessment Policy story.

You will hear more about these updates at fall Back-to-School nights. Staff looks forward to sharing more information and a website with assessment and grading resources in August.

Important LCPS Athletics Updates for 2025–26 Important LCPS Athletics Updates for 2025–26

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, LCPS is sharing several important updates related to athletics registration, eligibility and participation. Please review the highlights below. Full details are available at www.lcps.org/athletics.

Athletic registration now through Arbiter Sports
Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, all LCPS athletic registrations must be completed through Arbiter Sports. Paper forms and other platforms will no longer be accepted. Arbiter Sports is secure, multilingual and user-friendly. Note: Internet access is available at any LCPS school if needed.

VHSL physical form updates
All student-athletes must use the new VHSL physical form dated April 2025, starting July 1. Forms must be signed by a medical provider on or after May 1, 2025, and are valid for 14 months. Incomplete forms or missing signatures may delay participation. Submit completed forms directly to your school’s athletic office.

VHSL transfer rule changes beginning fall 2026
New rules will affect rising ninth graders who request special permission to attend a school outside their assigned zone. These students will be ineligible to participate in VHSL athletics for 365 days unless they attended that school’s feeder middle school the previous year. Students attending their zoned school or an LCPS academic program remain eligible.

Updated attendance requirement for student activities
Starting in 2025–26, students must arrive on time to be eligible for sports practices, competitions or performances. The previous 15-minute grace period has been removed.

Questions should be directed to your school’s athletic director or the LCPS Division of Athletics and Activities. Thank you for supporting LCPS athletics.

Tuscarora High School Celebrates 10th AVID Senior Graduation Class Tuscarora High School Celebrates 10th AVID Senior Graduation Class

Tuscarora High School celebrated its 10th graduating class of AVID seniors on May 22. Students, families, educators and administrators came together to recognize the Class of 2025 and the ongoing impact of the AVID program at Tuscarora.

AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—is a college and career readiness system that prepares students for postsecondary success, particularly those in the academic middle or who will be first-generation college students. Tuscarora remains the only AVID site in Loudoun County Public Schools.

Since the program’s launch, Tuscarora has graduated 232 AVID students. The Class of 2025 earned an average GPA of 3.51, collectively completing 21 Advanced Placement and 27 dual enrollment courses. Seniors were accepted to 14 in-state and 17 out-of-state colleges, while others will pursue military service or skilled trades.

The celebration included a shared dinner and a formal cord ceremony, with students receiving AVID cords marking successful program completion. The event emphasized the AVID framework—WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading)—as essential to student success. This year’s ceremony also honored retiring Principal Pamela Croft for her longtime support and leadership. Her commitment helped shape Tuscarora’s AVID program into a model of college and career readiness.

Tuscarora continues to lead the way in offering AVID in LCPS, reflecting a statewide trend of student achievement and expanded access to postsecondary opportunities. Learn more about AVID at explore.avid.org/data, or contact the LCPS AVID District Director. Read more about the AVID celebration.

Moorefield Station Elementary hosted its inaugural Children’s Business Fair on Wednesday, May 7, offering a powerful showcase of student innovation, talent and compassion. Young entrepreneurs created, marketed and sold their own products—including handmade crafts, stationery and jewelry—demonstrating real-world applications of classroom learning.

The fair wasn’t just about business—it was also about giving back. Students donated proceeds from their sales to Loudoun Hunger Relief, Women Giving Back and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Their generosity highlights the school’s commitment to empathy, service and community impact.

The event served as a dynamic service learning opportunity aligned with the LCPS Profile of a Graduate. The experience brought the division’s 5Cs—collaborator, communicator, contributor, creator and critical thinker—to life as students designed products, set prices, practiced persuasive communication and solved problems in real time.

Rooted in the curriculum, the Children’s Business Fair bridged classroom content in math, literacy and economics with hands-on experience and social responsibility. Students not only learned how to build a business, but also how to lead with purpose.

Moorefield Station’s first fair celebrated innovation, leadership and community, embodying the values of the school and Loudoun County Public Schools. The event empowered students to see themselves as change-makers, ready to use their creativity and compassion to make a difference.

Thank you to the parents, students, and LCPS colleagues who nominated these incredible educators for well-deserved recognitions.

Information and Opt-In Consent for Third-Party Educational Tools and Services Information and Opt-In Consent for Third-Party Educational Tools and Services

As part of our efforts to provide an engaging learning experience, LCPS uses a range of digital tools and services to support instruction and enhance student learning. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, LCPS will be required by Google to ask parents to consent, or “opt in,” for their students to be able to access Google applications not designed explicitly for K-12 use, which are commonly used in instruction, like YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Translate.

LCPS already limits access to applications that are not required or recommended for learning to the greatest extent possible on LCPS-issued devices and student permissions vary according to their elementary, middle or high school level.

There is no action needed now; however, in August, when parents/guardians complete the Online Verification process for their student, they will see a box to opt their student in or out for these Google Services for their use in learning. We are writing to you now so you have time to research and review the process to the degree you wish prior to the Online Verification process in August.

Teachers will be planning alternative resources to offer students; however, if these resources are needed, parents/guardians can easily update their preferences for their student's access. Simply return to your ParentVue account at any time and update the choice. The LCPS technology department is working on implementing an efficient process so that students can use these services the day after consent is received.

If you have questions, please read the posted Frequently Asked Questions or visit the list of LCPS-approved software.
