Help Shape ATA’s April 30 SPED Meeting with Ed Services
On April 30, the ATA SPED Committee will meet with AUSD Educational Services to address ongoing concerns raised by both SPED and general education educators. To make this meeting as productive as possible, we need your input.
If there are issues at your site or concerns you want addressed, please take a moment to complete the Google Form. You may also contact ATA directly. Your feedback helps the committee identify districtwide patterns, raise site-specific concerns, and push for solutions.

The ATA SPED Committee includes:
Gina Centeno, RSP, Ramona

Addressing Concerns About Reassignments
I want to acknowledge the concern many of you feel around possible reassignments. Those concerns are real. A change in assignment can affect your planning, your confidence, and your day-to-day work.
Reassignments should not happen without reason. They should be tied to legitimate program or facility needs, and those decisions should be made with care. Educators are not interchangeable, and your experience, strengths, and background matter.
If you are reassigned and have concerns, you have the right to ask for a written explanation. If that does not resolve the issue, you may request a meeting with your site administrator. If concerns remain, the matter may be brought to the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services or their designee. You also have the right to union representation throughout this process.
You should also receive the support needed to succeed in any new assignment. That includes access to materials, guidance, and training where needed. No one should be set up to struggle.
For those concerned about being assigned a combination class, our contract includes the following provision under Article XII, Section I:
Unit members who volunteer or are assigned to teach self-contained, non-special education combination classes shall receive twenty-five (25) hours of extra duty pay per school year.
That language does not remove the challenges that come with a combo class, but it does recognize the added work involved.
ATA will continue to push for fairness, clarity, and proper support when reassignments are made. If you are affected and want support, reach out. We are here to help.
