Happy Friday, Sunset Ohana!

We have officially settled into the rhythm of a new school year, and it has been great seeing our students getting comfortable in their classrooms, reconnecting with friends and becoming more independent each day.

Thank you to our families for helping us get off to such a positive start. Whether it is getting everyone out the door in the morning, attending Back to School Night, volunteering, supporting our teachers or simply asking your child about their day, all of those little things add up. Sunset is a special community because so many people are willing to pitch in and be part of it.

Sun drops...

Brand new"ish" news...

•Every Minute Matters!~ We had several Sunset students heading out of town today for a soccer tournament, and I LOVE seeing our kids and families making memories together through sports, activities and family time. Some of my favorite family memories were on a sports field.

I also noticed something this morning that I really appreciated. Several families still brought their children to school for the morning and then signed them out when it was time to hit the road. Thank you!

Even when your child can only attend for part of the day, having them at school matters. They get some valuable learning time with their teachers and classmates, and their attendance also helps support the ADA funding our schools rely on.

And let's be honest...if bringing them to school for a couple of hours also gives you a little uninterrupted time to pack the car and get everyone ready to leave, that's not a bad bonus! 😁

Obviously, there are times when missing school simply can't be avoided. But when your family plans allow your child to attend even part of the day before heading out, we appreciate you making the effort to get them here.

Every minute with our kids matters.

And to our Sunset families competing this weekend... good luck, have fun and make some great memories!

•Community Service Day~ Volunteers Needed! One of the things that makes Livermore such a great place to live is the way our community shows up for one another. Community Service Day is Saturday, September 19 from 8:00–11:00 a.m. Volunteers will start the morning with breakfast and then head out to help beautify parks, schools and other areas throughout Livermore.

This is a great opportunity for families to serve together, meet other members of our community and show our kids what it looks like to give a little of our time to make our community better.

Please see the Community Service Day flyer above for more information and to sign up. We would love to see some Sunset families out there!

I have asked the organizers to prioritize, the red and yellow curbs, minor weeding, trash collection and washing windows.

•Yard Duty~ Sunset Needs a Yard Duty! ☀️ We have an immediate need right here at Sunset!

We currently have a yard duty position available every school day from 11:20 a.m.–1:20 p.m. This person helps supervise students during lunch and recess and is another friendly adult presence on campus.

It is only two hours a day, and the schedule works especially well for someone who wants to be involved at school but doesn't necessarily have an entire day available. If you are interested, or know a parent, grandparent, neighbor or friend who might be a great fit, please check out the job posting on www.livermoreschools.org. We would love to find someone who enjoys kids and wants to be part of the Sunset Ohana.

•Picture Day~ September 17! Get those smiles ready, Sunset Nation! Picture Day is Wednesday, September 17. (See attached flier) Students will have their individual school pictures taken during the school day. Mark your calendars and get ready to say cheese!

•Want to Volunteer in a classroom? ~ If you are planning to volunteer, you will need to complete the Keenan mandated reporter training. (CA Senate Bill SB 848 went into effect in July.) Please apply (or re-apply if you volunteered last year) through Raptor. You have to reapply every year. If you were fingerprinted last year, you DO NOT need to get fingerprinted again. Brooke, our Office Specialist, (bway@lvjusd.org) will be clearing volunteers ASAP. Please check out the website for updates on getting cleared to volunteer.

•Sunset Bell Schedule and Calendar are both attached below.

Gate and Drop off information

Gate Entry and Exit for Sunset Elementary

Gates Open at 8:15 am

School Starts at 8:30 am

While you are allowed and welcome on campus, we ask that you be cognizant of teachers time and student behavior while we work to instill a culture of kindness and integrity. While we value you and want you to know you are a vital part of our community and are welcome here, we are still asking that you help your child take steps to becoming independent as they find their own way to class as they enter campus.

It is exciting to see Kindergartners walk to class, hang up their backpacks, grab what they need and head into class...all on their own. Trust me, it will happen in time.

Student LVJUSD Gmail Accounts

In accordance with security guidance, IT has updated student passwords to 9-digits. That means students with 8-digit student IDs will need to add a leading zero and students with 7-digit student IDs will need to add two leading zeros to be able to log in. Students with 9-digit student IDs or who had previously changed their password to a personal password were not affected.

If students need help, they can get help from their teachers when school starts.
