Message from the Principal:

As the African proverb says, "It takes a village to raise a child." Families look different from household to household, and we know there are many active adults in your child's life. Also, many parents' are working and unable to attend some events, leading to children feeling upset and parents stressed when they just can't make it work.

We have tried to be more inclusive and have shifted the titles of some events. For example, we changed "Doughnuts with Dads" to "Doughnuts with a Grownup" and had a wonderful event with many dads and other special adults too. Muffins with Mom, is now "Muffins in the Morning" - we welcome moms or any other special adult who would like to spend time with your child!

We have had wonderful Daddy Daughter Dances at Southside and that is not changing, but our new event is now called "Loved One & Me Dance" - We look forward to seeing our wonderful dads or other special adults in our young ladies lives and we are sure they will continue to have an amazing time!

Thank you for helping our school family to be more inclusive of the village it takes to raise such wonderful Stingrays!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS....

Parents/Guardians:

Tutoring for spring will start on Thursday this week rather than Tuesday. Our Tutoring Coordinator was sick last week and some but not all of the tutoring letters were distributed. Thank you for your understanding.

Extracurricular Activities: Reminder that the Fashion Club starts Friday. Also, sign ups are currently going on for Girls on the Run as well as Heart & Sole! Girls who code starts back the week of the 27th. The required paperwork for Boys and Girls middle school soccer is available on the school website and is due February 7th! Sports physicals expire one calendar year from date of issue. To try out for a sport athlete team you must have all paperwork, including a current sports physical by the due date!

Recommitment ends January 31st. Please contact CeCe Zamora, czamora@southsidecharter.org if you need assistance. Click here to recommit [https://csusa.schoolmin t.net/signin]https://csusa.schoolmint.net/signin

Open Enrollment for siblings and new families is now open and closes on February 14th. Help spread the word to other fabulous families about Southside! K-2 seats will probably fill for 2020-21 with the Feb 16th lottery!

Per your Request...

In a recent PTC meeting, parents asked for a possible Amazon Wish List where they can purchase needed items to donate to the school. Below is the Amazon Wish List for DCSS. We love in person volunteers, but if you purchase from the wish list, you can submit your receipt for your efforts for volunteer time credit. Thank you for helping DCSS!

Need Volunteer Hours? 20 are required per child, or 30 per family with multiple students

Log your volunteer hours on a computer in your Powerschool account (option does not appear on the App)

IF you need to log more volunteer time and have been busy this fall, there are some off-site opportunities that can be done from home...

Leave a positive review on Facebook, Yelp, Great Schools - let shopping families know what you LOVE about Duval Charter at Southside. This helps our marketing team!

Let Jill know that you can enter Coke codes that have been collected/sent in to type in for DCSS on the coke rewards program. About every 3-4 weeks, she can send a baggie of codes and lids for you to enter at the cokerewards site for DCSS and we get credit for the codes entered.

Apps & Programs at DCSS

Parents were asking in PTC if we could make a list of helpful apps/programs that are used by all at DCSS and let them know what they are for and how they are used.

Below is our attempt to begin to meet this need and give more information about the apps and programs that we use.

Communication/School Management:

Powerschool: (All students K-8)

  • PowerSchool: Check student attendance, grades (iPhone/Android App and website) and log Volunteer Time (desktop site only). Create an account and then use your student's individual credentials to link your student to your account. Contact front desk if you need help accessing your account.

School Mint: (Replacing ACE - All students K-8)

  • https://csusa.schoolmint.net/: Re-enroll, apply for new students

Live School: (All students K-8)

  • https://www.whyliveschool.com/how-to/get-started-as-a-parent: Our classroom teachers use LiveSCHOOL to track positive behavior and share behavior feedback with you and your child. Students will receive positive points in LiveSchool for hard work and good behavior. We will also give feedback on the negative choices your child may make. You can access all of this information from your computer or phone. The classroom teacher can give you the access code that you need. We also want to reward students for doing the right thing! As part of our use of LiveSchool, your child will be able to spend his or her points on various classroom and school-wide rewards. We are going to be focusing on positive reinforcement and encouragement and hope that your child earns lots of exciting rewards! To learn more, please visit the following web address for a short video introduction to the service: https://youtu.be/bB9CYHH4dc4

Edmodo: (All students K-8)

  • Edmodo is an educational technology company offering a communication, collaboration, and coaching platform to K-12 schools and teachers. The Edmodo network enables teachers to share content, distribute quizzes, assignments, and manage communication with students, colleagues, and parents. Middle School students also participate in an "All Middle School" communication group in which they can get information about school events, or ask questions. Students can email their teacher directly through Edmodo.

Focus:

  • Student Management System used by Duval County Public Schools - for which we are part. For 2020-21, charter school parents will also have Focus account access. Students do have Focus/DCPS student numbers which makes them able to access the public library, computer sales, etc.

Next Week we will add more information about the learning programs we use online for students! *Sorry we didn't get it ready in time for 1/21 newsletter but we will have it for 1/27

Middle School Soccer Middle School Soccer

As we add 4-5 sports over two years, the next sport we are adding for 2019-20 is Boys and Girls Soccer! Stay tuned for try out dates, but you can go ahead and complete the paperwork and get sports physicals (good for one calendar year from date of issue)

TO TRYOUT THIS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 2/7/2020
