ELA: Mrs. Camden

This week we continued to grow our thinking around theme for our book club novels. Students were given an outline to fill out for the literary essay. The need to go back to the text to find direct quotes to use as support for their thinking.

Our root words this week were Chron/Temp meaning time.

Just a reminder, students are required to read two books each month for the rest of the school year. These books count as summative grades. Remind you child that they must fill out a completed book form for their reading to count. Completed book forms are in the classroom next to the pencil sharpener.

I will be placing a Scholastic book order on February 14th for anyone who submits an order online.

If you’d like to donate books to our classroom library, we have wish-lists on Scholastic and Amazon. Thanks!

Science: Mr. Vorel

As you have (hopefully) heard, we are starting our next design/build project in science class. Our next project is to design and build a hot air balloon that we will launch outside. Students are creating a balloon that they believe will stay in the air the longest, and travel the furthest. We will build the balloons with tissue paper and glue sticks. Students are generally working in pairs to complete this challenge. Each balloon requires about 20-30 sheets of paper to build. Because of the amount of tissue paper and glue sticks that are required, I cannot provide every group with all of the required materials. If possible, I kindly ask that students bring in 20-30 sheets of tissue paper (like that used in gift bags) and glue sticks (the twist up kind, not glue gun glue sticks) to complete this project. The outcome is very neat and students will love going outside to launch their balloons. I have found packs of 35 sheets of tissue paper and a four pack of glue sticks at Dollar Tree - each costing $1. We began building the project on Tuesday and will continue to build the balloons into the early part of next week.

Students will get a job and a family situation and in 4 hours they will have to create a budget and pay bills according to their life situation. It is worth the price of admission to see them try and figure out how to pay the bills.
