"Encourage one another and build each other up ..."

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Well, we are a third of the way through our year together, with today marking the end of the first trimester. I am really proud of the class, and how much they've already grown! Look forward to report cards next week.

It was nice to have Tuesday off this week, and we managed to get so much done, even with a day off! We survived the wet day today, and I'm sure the kids are anxious to be out of the classroom, where we stayed warm and dry all day! We are so close to reaching our class goal of 800 points, and will hit it before we leave for break, so we will plan a read in day when we get back!

In Reading this week, we focused on the realistic fiction text "They Don't Mean It," and finished up our November book reports. We will be starting our December/January book reports after Thanksgiving break, and they will be due at the end of January. In Math, we finished up our unit on division today, and next week, we will begin dividing with decimals. This is a very tricky topic, so I encourage students to keep practicing division at home! We have two really great online resources: Mathletics and IXL. Log ins are in student homework planners, and I am always able to hand out more resources if you like. In Science, we kept looking at ecosystems, and we will be looking at decomposers more closely next week, with a focus on worms! We will also take our much anticipated trip to the UCSB Chem Lab! Coming up in Social Studies, we will begin our State Reports, which we will work on all 2nd trimester. Next week, in Religion, we started and continue work on our Keep Christ in Christmas posters.

Chemistry Lab

On Thursday, we head to the Chem Lab at UCSB. We will be leaving shortly after morning assembly, and return before lunch. Thank you to all our parent drivers!

Students should bring two very shiny pennies. They will be using these in one of their experiments.

UCSB does have a dress code for all those in the Chemistry Lab. Please have students wear long sleeves under their spirit shirts, along with pants, close toed shoes, and hair must be pulled back.

State Report

When we return from Thanksgiving Vacation, we will begin work on our State Report. This is a lengthy research report that serves as our main writing project all trimester. Each component of the report is broken down into chapters, which we will focus on - one per week. I encourage you to sit with your student and log into your school Google account, where students will have access to all material. While we do most of this work at school, there may be some work needed at home. Students selected three state choices today, and will find out which state they will be researching next week!
