Hornet Families,

What a great week to be a Hornet! It finally feels like we are settling into the new school year. Students and teachers are hard at work as we hit the halfway point through September already. We only have two important events happening next with Picture Day on Thursday, September 19th and on Saturday, September 21st, Hermosa School will host the "A" Volleyball Tournament for teams in the area! We encourage everyone to come check out the games and have lunch at our Student Council concession stand. If you would like to volunteer or help out, please contact Mr. Trandem, Coach Weekley, Coach Lowe, Coach Venhuizen, or Coach Henwood. You can find the bracket and schedule in the activities section below.

Remember to check out the important information below and make sure you check out the pictures from the week at the bottom of the newsletter. I hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Hermosa School ~ Did you know? Hermosa School ~ Did you know?

Did you know at Hermosa we have three tiers of instruction that we utilize to help our students learn and achieve at high levels. These different levels are used to help ALL students learn, even if they learn in different ways.

The first level is known as Tier 1 instruction, this instruction is taught to ALL students and should meet the needs of 80%-90% of the students. Tier 1 instruction is delivered by the classroom teacher. Tier 1 instruction utilizes the district wide curriculum.

The second level is knows as Tier 2 instruction, this instruction is designed to be taught to 5%-10% of the student population and is targeted to help those students who struggle grasping the concepts taught during Tier 1 instruction. During Tier 2 instruction, the classroom teacher or school interventionist works with a small group of students, usually 3-5 students, to teach grade-level material or to teach concepts that fill in learning gaps from previous grade levels.

The third level is known as Tier 3 instruction, this instruction is designed to be taught to 1%-5% of the student population and is targeted to help those students who struggle grasping the concepts taught during both Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction. During Tier 3 instruction, the school interventionist works will individual students to teach grade-level material or concepts that fill in learning gaps from previous grade levels.

If a student progresses through all of the tiered levels of support and is still struggling to grasp concepts, a special education referral may be appropriate. At Hermosa School it is our goal to provide each student with the support they need to be successful. All feasible interventions are utilized prior to a special education referral.

Happy Weekend! What a fast week!

This week 3rd, 7th, and 8th grade brainstormed their goals for the school year. Many students made their goals related to academics and wish to improve their math abilities, get good grades, and stay out of trouble. As 8th graders reach driving age, several made their goal this year to learn how to drive and pass their driver's test. What an exciting time!

For the last two weeks of September, all students' counseling lessons will focus on School Pride and Character Counts. We are proud to be Hornets and as we celebrate Homecoming September 23rd -- 26th we also celebrate what it means to be proud of our school and district and all the ways we can show it. With October just around the corner, lessons will also reintroduce our Character Counts and our first Character Counts trait, Trustworthiness. Character Counts is a program built on improving school culture as all students are introduced to the Six Pillars of Character throughout the school year. We will focus on a new Pillar of Character each month in our counseling lessons. We discuss what the trait means, and how we embody it at home, school, and with others. At the end of each month, two students from each grade are nominated for that character trait and receive a Character Counts certificate!

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
