Whale Tales
August 2024

Principal's Message
Dear Webster Community,
Even though it was a short week, it was truly jam-packed in the very best ways.
Earlier this week, our School Site Council officially approved Webster’s Comprehensive School Safety Plan. I’m grateful for the thoughtful collaboration and partnership that goes into ensuring our campus remains a safe, prepared, and caring environment for students and staff. This work reflects our shared commitment to student well-being and proactive planning.
We also had a powerful day of professional learning as our teachers participated in Learning Rounds, observing colleagues facilitate Building Thinking Classroom (BTC) lessons across grade levels. These learning walks are part of our schoolwide focus on strengthening mathematical discourse and collaboration aligned to the Standards for Mathematical Practice. It was inspiring to see high engagement, intentional instructional moves, and personalized touches in every classroom. I’m thankful to our instructional coach, Maribeth Majewski, for helping facilitate a meaningful day of reflection and growth — and to our teachers for their openness, curiosity, and dedication to improving instruction for our students.
The highlight of my week, however, was welcoming prospective families to campus for our TK/K Round Up. Families learned about what makes Webster special — our strong academics, project-based learning, focus on the whole child, enrichment programs, and the warm, connected culture that defines our school community. Our Student Leadership Tour Ambassadors truly shined. Through a student panel and school tour, they answered questions thoughtfully and shared a genuine “day in the life” of being a Webster Whale 🐳 — from favorite spaces and activities to memories that make Webster feel like home. They shared what they love most about our school — their experiences, friendships, and sense of belonging. A huge shoutout to our Tour Ambassadors: Celine B., Louie B.-D., Ryker C., Leo H., Isabel I., Phoebe J., Maya M., Luna S., Parker T., and Weston W. I am so proud of how seriously they prepared for this moment and how bravely they represented our community.
As we continue welcoming prospective families, we invite you to help spread the word and join us at the Malibu Pathway Community Showcase tomorrow morning at Malibu High School from 9:00–11:00 AM to learn more about all that our Malibu schools have to offer.
WEBSTER WEAR 🐳
Congratulations to our 2nd graders — with a tie between Ms. Harris’ and Ms. Stark’s classes, both earning 100% participation! Way to go!

⚡ Learning Rounds in Action ⚡
This week, we were grateful to provide our teachers the opportunity to step out of their classrooms for a half day and observe colleagues facilitating Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) lessons in action. As part of our school implementation plan, these Learning Rounds support our goal of empowering students to engage in structured, collaborative conversations aligned to the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Through classroom observations, reflection, and discussion, teachers identified instructional trends, collected best practices, and deepened their understanding of BTC and math practice integration. These learning walks strengthen collective efficacy — all in service of improving math instruction for our students.
A huge thank you to our incredible instructional coach, Maribeth Majewski, for helping facilitate a thoughtful and impactful day of professional learning. I’m also deeply appreciative of our teachers for their engagement, openness, and dedication throughout the process. It was inspiring to see such high levels of student engagement and the intentional, personalized touches in every classroom.
