Weekly Updates! October 6-17

Hello Hamilton Families,

We have had a great first 6 weeks of school! Our students are settled into the class and school routines, made new friends and are working hard on their academics! We recently completed our first round of assessments and are pleased at the growth we are seeing in reading! We have started a new math curriculum and staff are reporting good results from this new resource.

To continue to help your child grow to their full potential, remind them to read 20 minutes each night, turn screens off an hour before bed and get to sleep early enough to get 8-9 hours of sleep. Having regular routines for after school, bed time and getting ready for school can have a very positive impact on how well your child does at school each day. Thank you for your home support and being our partner in your child's education!

Dismissal

Please remember that if there is a change to how your child normally goes home you need to send a note to the office or call the office. When parents make day of changes that are sent to the teacher on Dojo there is a chance that they won't see that in time. Please make sure to call the office for any day of changes. If we have not been notified we will follow the normal dismissal procedure.

Toys at School

We continue to see students brining toys and personal items to school. Please help your child remember to leave all their toys etc at home. We will not be responsible for lost, stolen or broken items. If this becomes an ongoing issue for any particular student, the items will be kept in the office for parent pick up. When students bring items from home it becomes a distraction and very upsetting if the item is lost or stolen.

Jim Basketball Jones

Monday we will have Jim Basketball Jones presenting at Hamilton thanks to a generous donation from our PTA! Mr. Jones helps kids to understand the importance of not giving up, friendship and kindness all while entertaining them with some cool basketball tricks! Mr. Jones is also an author, if you would like to purchase a signed copy of his book please send cash or check made out to Jim Jones. See the flyer below. If you are unable to print the flyer, just write it on a paper, put that in a labeled envelope with your payment. Remind your child to give it to the teacher in the morning.

Dress Code

Please remember that students should be in closed toe shoes at school. While slides are very comfortable they are quite a hazard on the playground and not appropriate for gym class. Also, we do not allow belly shirts and short shorts. Girls wearing very short shorts with long tops making it look like they are not wearing shorts is causing a disturbance. Clothing for boys and girls needs to have the appropriate coverage. We do have some extra clothes and shoes in our pantry if you are in need, please reach out.

Halloween Parade

Each year we have a wonderful Halloween parade at Hamilton! We will have our parade again on 10/31 at 10 am at Hamilton. If it is good weather we will be outside and if it is bad weather we will parade inside. Families are welcome to come and watch the parade from designated places based on the weather, you may not walk with your child. Please make sure costumes are school appropriate, no weapons and your child can walk in the costume. We are asking for candy donations for the parade to make it an extra fun day. If you are able to donate a bag of candy we would greatly appreciate it! If you are able to donate just send it to the office and we will take care of the rest! As always thank you for your support!

Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports -PBIS

As you know Hamilton is a PBIS school which means we use the PBIS framework to teach positive behaviors. Each month we have a spotlight behavior and this month we are focusing on Integrity- doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Each child has the opportunity to earn spotlight behavior points on the Dojo. The student with the highest number of points in each class gets a free Hamilton t-shirt! Below are some links to videos and a book list that you can use at home to help reinforce doing the right thing even when no one is looking. We are also teaching students that having integrity means doing the right thing even when those around you are not making good choices. Talk to your child at home about this character trait and what they are learning about it at school.

By Having School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports in Place, PBIS:

  • Establishes a healthy school culture and climate that is a reflection of the people learning and working within the school community.
  • Increases student engagement and instructional time through students having clearer expectations, deeper connections, and healthier classroom environments.
  • Empowers students to play a control role in their education by defining positive expectations and teaching students skills to help create the environment they want to see and be in.
  • Reduces racial inequities in discipline through aligned school-wide expectations and values.
  • Makes all other school practices better by using PBIS evidence-based practices and commitment to ongoing improvement.

Attendance

Attendance matters!! Please make sure your child is at school every day for the full day. This means being on time and staying the full day. When your child is late they miss out on the opportunity to complete their morning routines in a calm manner to have a good start to the day. They often miss out on both learning and social opportunities. Leaving early has similar negative consequences. When students leave early they miss out on important learning and in some cases their recess. Recess might not seem like an important part of school but many social and life skills are learned at recess. Please work to provide your child with the best possible day of learning each day.

I will be reaching out to set up a meeting with those of you who bring your child late on a regular basis or pick up early on a regular basis. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Volunteers

Chaperone and Volunteer Background (ICHAT) Request

The Board encourages the use of volunteers to support the School District. Because the safety of the School District´s students is of paramount importance, every individual volunteer is required to undergo a criminal background check through the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) before they are permitted to volunteer, regardless of whether or not the volunteer will work directly with students. ICHAT criminal background checks will be performed annually for each volunteer.

When the background check is complete, a list of approved chaperones and volunteers will be shared with our school secretaries / principals / assistant principals on a "need to know" basis. The ICHATS will be kept on file for the current school year.

Parents may elect not to be screened. Please note that if you are not screened you will not be able to chaperone or drive any children other than your own on field trips.

Depending on the volume of ICHAT requests, it may take up to 10 days to screen the requests.

If you have any questions, please contact Human Resource at 734-419-2025.

Thank you for your continued support of our children here at Wayne-Westland Community Schools.

Transportation

For students who ride the bus, please make sure they are at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the assigned time as the routes can run early from time to time. The same is true at the end of the day, please be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to drop off just incase they are early.

All Young 5's and Kindergarten students must be met by an adult at the bus before they will be let off the bus. If you want your child Y5 or K student to be released to an older sibling or family member you can fill out a form in the office to give to the driver.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools has partnered with Here Comes the Bus to offer families an app that will help avoid students and parents from waiting too long for the bus. Here Comes the Bus allows parents to see where their child’s bus is along the route and when it will be at their bus stop.

  1. Wondering where the bus is? Now you’ll know.

    • See real-time map locations for your student’s buses
    • Get push notifications when the bus gets close by
    • Get everyone to the stop at the right time, every time

Corewell Clinic at Adams Middle School

The Corewell School Based Health Clinic at Adams Middle School is a great resource available to children ages 3 to 21 that live or attend school in Wayne/Westland. They provide medical services including: sports physicals, well child exams, school and childhood vaccines, hearing and vision screenings, sick visits, as well as mental health counseling. The clinic accepts all insurances, but no one is ever turned away for the inability to pay. They also have staff trained to assist families apply for medicaid. They are a great option if your student needs back to school vaccines or sports physicals and can't get into their PCP office, have no insurance, or can't pay a copayment. Appointments are highly recommended. They are open 5 days a week and hours vary. Call 734-728-2423 to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions.
