Severe Weather Information
From the USD 462 Crisis Plan:
"Severe weather means meteorological conditions are developing or present for weather that is potentially disruptive to normal procedures and/or may develop into conditions that are threatening to persons or property.
Weather advice from the National Weather Service is categorized into three significant
terms.
1. An “Advisory“ is utilized when weather is expected to disrupt normal routines but not be life threatening.
2. A “Watch” means weather conditions are present for the development of severe weather.
3. A “Warning” means severe weather conditions are occurring in your area. For a severe thunderstorm warning – each building should be on a heightened alert status ready to respond immediately if protective action is needed. For a tornado warning each building will take immediate protective action. Students WILL NOT be released during tornado warnings.
During a tornado warning each building staff will:
· Activate their building’s crisis team.
· Make necessary verbal announcements instructing students & staff.
· Locate and be ready to use the electronic megaphone.
· Review or activate severe weather drills.
· Locate and turn on District emergency radio (Listen to this radio for updates or instructions – communication to District should be minimal, broadcasting only vital information).
· Use building radios for internal instructions.
· Turn on local radio or TV for updates; listen to your NOAA weather radio.
· If severe weather procedures are activated, take portable radio, crisis kit and cell phone (for outside calls) to the sheltered area. All students and staff proceed to designated shelter areas. All are to take protective positions and remain quiet.
· Staff is responsible for the accountability of each student in their class.
· All persons should remain in sheltered area until the “all clear” is given
· Building administration is responsible for the accountability of every person in building."
In this season of severe weather, we wanted to clarify our policy. Our storm shelter at CJSHS is open to the community and we will make every attempt to have it unlocked on days where severe weather is advised. If severe weather occurs during school hours, we will have to follow the above procedures to ensure that the safety of our students and staff are at the forefront. We will make every attempt to use our school reach services to communicate updates with parents and families.
If we are under a severe tornado warning - students will be in shelter and will not be release from the building to a parent or guardian but the parent or guardian may come into the shelter to be with them. If you plan to sign your child out in the event of severe weather, please do so prior to our area being placed in a severe tornado warning.
