WIS Polar Paw Print
November / December 2026
From the Principal
Dear Westfield Intermediate School Families,
As we move into November and December, we find ourselves at a natural point in the school year to pause, reflect, and appreciate how far we have come. The first few months at Westfield Intermediate School have been filled with new experiences, growing relationships, challenges, and accomplishments. Our fifth graders have continued to find their place and build confidence as members of the WIS community, while our sixth graders have grown into their roles as leaders and positive role models.
Throughout the fall, we have continued to build on our schoolwide commitment to being Accountable, Safe, and Kind. These expectations guide how we treat one another, how we approach challenges, and how we contribute to making WIS a place where everyone feels welcome, supported, and ready to learn. The small choices we make each day have a lasting impact on the kind of community we create together.
As the days grow shorter and the winter season approaches, I hope we can all take a moment to recognize the growth that has taken place, celebrate the successes, both big and small, and consider the opportunities that lie ahead. The start of a new calendar year offers a chance to reflect on where we have been and look forward with renewed energy, purpose, and optimism.
Thank you for your continued partnership, your support of our students and staff, and the trust you place in us each day. We are proud of the WIS community we are building together and look forward to all that is still ahead.
Together,
Mary Claire St. James
Principal, Westfield Intermediate School

Honoring Our Veterans
Veterans Day is an opportunity to pause and recognize the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country. It is also a reminder that behind every uniform is a person, a family, and a story of service that deserves our gratitude and respect. We are proud to take time as a school community to help our students understand the meaning of this day and the importance of honoring those who have served.
This Friday, November 6, WIS will hold a Veterans Day ceremony. Members of our Grade 6 class have invited family members who are veterans to join us as distinguished guests as we recognize and thank them for their service.
Earlier this week, we were also fortunate to welcome Senator John Velis to WIS. Senator Velis shared his own experiences serving in the military and spent time helping students write thank-you cards that will be shared with local veterans. He spoke about how meaningful these letters can be to those serving, explaining that they are often shared with fellow service members and passed around their units, bringing smiles and encouragement to many. We are grateful to Senator Velis for taking the time to connect with our students and help them understand the lasting impact of a simple act of gratitude.
To all veterans in our WIS community and beyond, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your dedication. We are grateful for you.
WIS Annual Turkey Trot - November 18
Get ready to trot! Our annual WIS Turkey Trot will take place on Wednesday, November 18, from 2:35–3:20 p.m. Students are invited to participate in a fun, after-school one-mile run or walk on the back field while supporting the Westfield Food Pantry. To participate, students must bring a signed permission slip along with either two canned goods or a $3 donation. We will also have a little friendly competition, with prizes for the top two finishers and the homeroom that collects the most donations! Thank you for helping us make a difference in our community while having some fun along the way! And many thanks to Ms. Pisano and the Builders Club for organizing this worthwhile event!
