Ms. Engwer's PreK/K Newsletter
December 2024
What's Happening?!
Whoa! Slow Down! It's December already! We only have 10 school days left in December. We will work hard, but keep it fun and engaging with holiday themes, music, arts and crafts. See below for the importance of the Arts in Education. 💖
ELA/Reading
For handwriting, students will continue practicing learned letters through Phonics to Reading and the Handwriting Without Tears program.
Pre-Kindergarten is following the same sequence of letters as Kindergarten. We are focusing on Uppercase letter formation and letter-sound using the Lively Letters Program and Handwriting Without Tears. Whole group instruction is used for introducing letters, then small groups for differentiation based on grade and skill level.
PreK will also be working on the theme of Amazing Animals throughout the month of December and into January. Different focus areas (All Kinds of Animals, Animal Homes, Creepy, Crawly Insects and Animals Grow and Change) will be discussed using a variety of literary texts and activities.
Math
Throughout November, Kindergarten and PreKindergarten had been working hard on writing the numbers 0-10 and have been superstars! We are now ready to move on and continue in our books. Kindergarten will move on to Chapter 3: Positions. We will focus on position words, such as above, below, under, over, between, etc. The concepts of Left and Right will be of significant importance in this unit.
PreKindergarten will also focus on positional words, especially left and right. Their unit will also incorporate distance, measurement, and maps. Instruction, when appropriate, will be whole group. Areas of counting and number recognition are included daily.
Important Dates
December 17: Santa's Workshop Holiday Shopping
December 20: Pajama Day!
December 25: Merry Christmas! 🎄
January 1: Happy New Year 2025!
December 21-January 5: Holiday Vacation
Attendance in PreK/K
Another month done and another BIG SHOUT OUT to all PreK/K Families and Students! We had great attendance, AGAIN, for the month of November! Our students earned an extra special (music, art, gym) to "cash in" in December. Keep up the great work getting those kiddos to school!
Importance of the Arts in Education
There is more and more information available that shows how crucial arts integration is to creating well-rounded, well-prepared learners and leaders. It is so important that we integrate and promote the arts in our curriculum. Our trips to MA MoCA help foster that importance, while also giving us the opportunity to experience other forms of art which we may not encounter otherwise.
Why arts integration is so important:
- Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills.
- Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand.
- Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
- Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance: all techniques that are necessary in presentations (visual, digital) of academic work.
- Integrating art with other disciplines reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork.
- Arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world.
- The arts provide challenges for learners at all levels.
- Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world.
- A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate.
- A study of Missouri public schools in 2010 found that greater arts education led to fewer disciplinary infractions and higher attendance, graduation rates, and test scores.
