Ms. Hanson's Notes
What a great week on the AVE! School is in full swing! We will be hosting Curriculum Night next Tuesday, August 27. We will have two sessions to accommodate families with multiple students. The first session will be from 6-6:30, and the second from 6:30-7. You can also use part of the time to visit the cafeteria with Specials, Gifted, and EIP teachers.
We appreciate all the support you have given us regarding the new drop-off location on Oakview. Several of you contacted me and the city about getting another crossing guard at 4th and Oakview. I spoke with Jennifer Ross from the city, and she explained that budgeting for crossing guards occurs in July, and they do not currently have funding for another guard. They are working on some solutions to make the intersection safer, and we will continue to have staff in that area. One immediate request is for students to follow the Safe Routes to School, which does not include the intersection at 4th & Oakview. Safe Routes directs all students to the corner of 5th and Oakview and cross where there is a crossing guard. Additionally, please be sure to pull up as far as possible so we can fit in all the cars.

3rd Grade CogAT Testing Starts September 4
From September 4-6, all 3rd-grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Unlike traditional achievement tests, which measure how well a student has learned the curriculum, the CogAT assesses a child’s ability to reason abstractly and recognize patterns and relationships in the world around them.Teachers can use CogAT scores to better understand a child’s pattern of strengths and weaknesses. Our school district also uses CogAT scores to identify academically-gifted students.

Spotlight on Specials - Music
Students are learning how we organize ourselves in both the music room and the art of music itself. What are the expectations of the music room? What does it look and feel like to sing, listen, dance, and play instruments?
How do we, as musicians, read music? These questions and more will begin to be answered in this first term.
