No School Tomorrow for MLK, Jr. Day
Dear BES Families,
It was so nice having a full week - I bet your teachers were just as tired as the kids after this week! I know I was! However, we are back in our groove and getting things done! Feels so good!
Last week, our Wednesday assembly focused on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We challenge our students and staff to Live Like Martin each year. We encourage everyone to not just think of tomorrow as a day off, but a chance to honor his memory by doing for others. I had several students tell me the ways they were going to give to their families show love and kindness to others! I can't wait to see and hear from them on Tuesday.
This Wednesday night we have our 5th grade Transition Night at LMS. It's hard to believe our 5th graders are getting ready to move up! This night has a lot of great information for students and parents as they look what middle school offers for classes and how it all works! I hope everyone can attend.
Our Parent Teacher Conferences are on February 5th and we will not have school that day. The sign-ups opened on Friday, January 17th. Another email with directions and information was sent out on Friday. If you need any assistance, please reach out.
Power Hour is under way! If you would like to sign your child up, you can do so here: Power Hour.
After School Clubs will begin this week on January 21st. Students will get reminder notes on the day of their club. Please remind those picking your student up of the days they are staying after.
Have a wonderful week!

5th Grade Transition Night!
Mindset Minute with Mrs. McIntire
Our mindset for January is 100% Accountable. This mindset is perfect for kicking off a new year as it helps students understand that we are responsible for our own success and happiness. Students learn that we all have unique and wonderful ideas and to never let excuses or negative thoughts get in the way of new opportunities. This mindset teaches us that we must focus our energy on achieving our goals and that our lives are a journey paved with setbacks and celebrations that we learn from all along the way.

Attendance and School Calendars
Receive an Attendance Email from School?
If you receive an attendance letter from school, it is meant to inform you of your student's absences or tardies. This way you can also keep track of the days gone and how to plan ahead to
miss fewer days.
When Your Child Misses School:
One week gone is approximately 7.5 hours of instruction lost in reading and in math. That doesn't include the extra time teachers provide to check for understanding and mastery of concepts so they can move on to the next concept. We see some students really struggle to get caught back up when they've missed extended time. We attempt to make it up during school hours, but your child may be required to stay after school to work with teachers or our tutors.
Please take note of our school calendars when planning your family's vacations.
Attendance is a focus at BES and we want your children at school! It can be very difficult for students to get caught up sometimes when they miss for extended periods of time. For example, when a student misses a week of school, that is up to 450 minutes of math instruction they are missing!
If your family does have a trip planned, we do not provide lessons or materials ahead of those trips. Teachers will work with you to schedule times when your student can be given that instruction and guided work time to ensure mastery of skills. This may have to happen before or after school, but we will also try to work during the school day as well.
GREAT school habits now help prepare students for future success!
