Annual Fund Drive: Week 2 Update
Hello Thunderbirds,
Thank you to the families who have contributed to the Annual Fund - we are off to a fantastic start this year! The Annual Fund is Thornhillâs first and most significant fundraising effort of the school year, and 2026 is our biggest year yet, with a goal of raising $260,000. Your contributions directly bridge critical district budget gaps, ensuring we can maintain essential staff, enrichment programs, and classroom resources that make Thornhill special.
This week, we are featuring Maya Novak, Thornhillâs Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA). Maya focuses on school-wide academic support, curriculum planning, schedule optimization, teacher coaching, and professional development. Additionally, our TSA leads the Junior Coach program, providing upper-grade students with meaningful leadership opportunities on campus and beyond.
In her own words: âThis is my 13th school year working at Thornhill! I taught 4th and 5th grades here before becoming the TSA last year. I have two kids of my own, in 8th and 12th grades, who are both Thornhill Alums. As the TSA, I have the opportunity to support my peers in the classroom, organize schedules that best meet the needs of students and staff, work as an instructional coach and develop/facilitate professional development along with the leadership team. I feel so lucky to work at a school with such a committed, supportive and fun staff, as well as a greater community that is involved and caring. I am inspired by the work they do every day, along with leadership and joy that is modeled by our amazing principal, Ms. Scott!â
Thank you to all who have donated already! And if you havenât yet, please take a moment to contribute to the Annual Fund!
As of this week, We have reached 22% of our goal of $260,000 with 19% of families participating.
We are aiming for 100% participation, so - we still need help! While the suggested donation amount is $1,100 per student, we welcome contributions of any size. Please consider supporting Thornhill at whatever level you are able.

PFC Open Board Positions
Board Spotlight: Auction Chair - We Need You (or You Two!)
Quick gut check: if nobody steps up for Auction Chair, our biggest fundraiser of the year doesn't happen the way it has in past years. That's the honest stakes.
The good news: venue and catering for this year's event are already secured, so you're not starting from zero. This role can also be split between two people, no experience required, and the PFC gives you full training on the auction software plus support from last year's team.
What's left to lead: setting the theme, coordinating décor and donations, running checkout day of, and a short weekly update for this newsletter. Heaviest lift is September and October at kickoff; it eases up from there.
Curious but not sure? Email president@thornhillschool.org and we'll set up a 15 minute call, no commitment. Or forward this to a friend who'd be great at it.
Also open: Webmaster (about 1 to 2 hours a week after setup), Parliamentarian (about 1 hour a month), and Site & Safety Chair (about 4 to 8 hours a month, coordinating site improvement days and helping with emergency preparedness).

Konstella & ParentSquare: Whatâs the Difference and Why Do We Have Both?
Hi Thunderbirds,
Welcome to the 2026-27 school year! Iâm Annie Sartor, the PFCâs VP of Communications, and I wanted to share how you can stay connected at Thornhill throughout the year.
At Thornhill, we use two main platforms to keep families informed and in the loop:
ParentSquare
This is the official communications platform for OUSD, and itâs where youâll receive updates from Thornhillâs administration and teachers.
Konstella
We use Konstella for everything ParentSquare doesnât cover! Itâs a private, secure, and free platform funded by the PFC that helps Thornhill families stay connected school-wide and within individual classrooms.
You can access Konstella from your browser or by downloading the app on Apple or Android devices. It includes lots of helpful features: school-wide and PFC announcements, classroom updates from Room Parents, an event calendar with reminders, volunteer sign-ups, private messaging, a school directory, social groups and committees, and file and photo sharing.
It also offers translation into multiple languages, making it easier for everyone to stay connected.
If you're a returning family, you'll be added to your studentâs new classroom(s) soon. Once you receive your class assignments, please take a moment to double-check that the correct classroom is listed in your Konstella account. If itâs missing, feel free to add your student to the right classroom(s). It really helps! Go to Settings â Your Children and make sure everything looks right.
New to Thornhill?
Welcome! You can register for Konstella here: https://www.konstella.com/cd/OLZ9CK.
Once you register, please take a moment to double-check that the correct classroom is listed in your Konstella account. If itâs missing, feel free to add your student to the right classroom(s). It really helps! Go to Settings â Your Children and make sure everything looks right.
You can always adjust your notification settings or explore new committees to join. Konstella is here to keep you in the know all year long.
Please also take a moment to read our Konstella Communication Rules and Guidelines.
If you are a committee lead and need to post a school-wide calendar event or announcement on Konstella, please review these instructions.
Other ways to stay connected:

If you have any questions about any of these platforms or how we use them, feel free to reach out to me at vpcommunications@thornhillschool.org.
Looking forward to a great year together!

About the Thornhill Newsletter
The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information. We all have plenty of other things to do, but please try to read it weekly, as it will more than likely answer most questions you have about whatâs up at school. Information about how to submit to the newsletter is below, but you can reach out to us at any time at newsletter@thornhillschool.org.
Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Priya Aslam, at newsletter@thornhillschool.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approvalânothing sent after this will be included in the following weekâs newsletter unless there are extenuating circumstances. Itâs fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.
THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, PFC President Selam Brown, VP of Communications Annie Sartor, and Principal Lashante Scott, member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
