October 2025

¡Saludos, Windham Community!

Welcome to the Windham Connection, our monthly newsletter highlighting the great things happening across our schools! Each month, I'll share stories that capture moments of pride, progress, and learning across the district related to our district priorities. Our work this year will center on three priority areas that are essential to every student’s success:

  • Daily Attendance: Every day matters for learning. “Every Thread Counts - Be in School Every Day!”

  • Challenging and Supportive Instruction: All students will learn rigorous, grade-level, standards-driven content with the support they need to succeed.

  • Safe, Welcoming Schools: Every student will learn in an environment where they feel included, respected, challenged, and supported.

I’m also excited to announce the launch of the Superintendent’s Advisory Boards, which will provide opportunities for staff, families and students to contribute ideas, collaborate, and problem solve around our district priorities. Meetings will be hybrid and will take place after school hours. Additional information on the dates and times will follow. I encourage you to apply using the link below and lend your voice to this important work.

To all our families, thank you for all you are doing to make sure students are in school and ready to learn!

Con gratitud,

Dr. Iris Gomero

Windham Public Schools Continue to Demonstrate Growth! Windham Public Schools Continue to Demonstrate Growth!

At the October 8th Board of Education meeting we presented on the improvement made by Windham Public Schools students on high stakes assessments. Below are some of the highlights!

  • Windham increased in achievement as measured by the Performance Index (PI) in ELA, Math, and Science from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025.*
  • All three index scores are greater than they were three years ago.
  • Windham had the same growth in ELA from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025 and increased in math as measured by Percent of Target Achieved (PTA).**
  • The achievement gap between Windham’s overall and high-needs groups has narrowed across all content areas.
  • Windham continues to have the highest performance indexes in District Reference Group I and outperformed other Alliance and non-Alliance districts from across the state!

These results are a testament to the hard work of our students, leaders, and staff as well as our interim Cabinet who remained focused through the end of the school year! Congratulations, ¡y vamos por más!

*Performance Index incorporates scores from grades 3-8 and 11 using Smarter Balanced, Next Generation Science Standards, SAT, Connecticut Alternative Assessment, and Connecticut Alternative Science Assessment. The score represents the average score on an index from 0 to 110.

**Growth uses Smarter Balanced and Connecticut Alternative Assessments for two consecutive years of test scores.

Celebrating Responsibility and Safety at Barrows Celebrating Responsibility and Safety at Barrows

Barrows students came together on September 26 and September 29 for assemblies focused on our monthly value of Responsibility and the importance of safety. Students learned that responsibility means taking care of what you are supposed to do and making good choices—whether it’s caring for a pet, cleaning up, or being the “boss of your own actions.”

Special guests Trooper Gary Allen and Mayor Tom Devivo shared how responsibility plays a role in their work and encouraged students to think about how they can be responsible and safe in their own school and community.

The assemblies also featured musical performances by Joni Torres, Aivee Gonzalez, and Qayonni Maldonado, and an SEL activity on Positive Self-Talk—reminding students to listen to their “inner coach” with phrases like “I can do this” and “I can ask for help.”

We celebrated progress in our 60-Day Attendance Challenge, with 379 students still holding perfect attendance, and recognized students who are modeling responsibility.

Looking ahead, October’s value is Respect: treating people, places, and things with care and kindness—because, like a boomerang, what you throw out comes back to you!

Cheers!

Attendance Task Force at Natchaug Elementary School Attendance Task Force at Natchaug Elementary School

I’d like to give a HUGE shout out to the Attendance Task Force at Natchaug School, headed up by one of our social workers, David Sanz! The ATF has been very proactive this month with student attendance and it shows! We offered “Set for Success” meetings to all parents to explain the importance of daily attendance. At Natchaug School we are asking all families to “keep it in the singles,” meaning keep total absences for the year under 10!

This August, NWS art teacher Noah Yilmaz headed to Iowa for the 2025 Midwestern and Eastern U.S. Mini-Institute for Educators. He was 1 of 10 teachers selected from Connecticut to join educators from Iowa, Michigan, and North Carolina. The program is hosted by the National Gallery of Art and partner museums, and it focuses on how looking closely at art can deepen learning across all subjects, build dialogue skills, and support social-emotional growth. Sessions include workshops with artists, scholars, and educators from across the country.

We are extremely grateful for the generous donation provided by the Liberty Bank Foundation. This donation will help offset the cost of the Windham Public Schools after-school tutoring program! The after-school tutoring program provides additional learning time, parent engagement activities and expand partnerships that enrich student learning experiences. These programs are designed to complement the school day by providing full academic support, particularly in literacy and math, homework completion time, and meaningful enrichment opportunities to enhance connections to school. The funds will go towards certified teachers' wages who provide extra tutoring during program hours,. The tutoring program will be held twice a week after school at Sweeney, North Windham, Natchaug and CHB STEM Academy starting October 1st and ending May 29th. This school year there are 12 certified After School tutors servicing 110 students.
