The next school committee meeting is on April 15th (with the previously scheduled April 1st meeting canceled). At this Finance-Focused meeting, the school committee will receive a comprehensive FY25 Quarter 3 budget report and consider the recommended candidate for Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning. I am pleased to announce my recommendation for the appointment of Dr. Kelly Williamson as the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. Dr Williamson will meet with the School Committee at their April 15th meeting. You can read all about Dr. Williamson’s extensive experience as a teacher, team leader, assistant principal, principal, central office leader, assistant superintendent, and school committee member in her resume. In honor of Jennifer Ferrari's nomination as a finalist for MA Teacher of the Year, the Lane School received a $5,000 award from Wellpoint, a health benefits company based in Woburn, which was presented to Mrs. Ferrari at the Lane School earlier today. Mrs. Ferrari’s art classes are student-centered, and her room has multiple stations where students can work with digital tools, sculpt clay, make prints, or use a variety of other materials. She encourages students to follow their interests, and she also connects art projects to events beyond her classroom, such as when her students created pieces about wildlife conservation and displayed them at the local library. These grant funds will support the purchase of iPads and related accessories, flexible seating, materials to create art-inspired sensory bins, adaptable art tools, materials for use in the Sculpture Center (easily the most popular artmaking center!) and additional "wish list" items that couldn't normally be purchased. Throughout this school year, in alignment with Strategic Objective 2.1 regarding student wellbeing, the School Committee has considered whether a change in school hours is in the best interest of students. This Bedford Healthy School Hours Communication Plan outlines multiple opportunities for stakeholders to learn more about the research on healthy school hours and to provide feedback. In particular, please note that 5th - 12th graders will have this opportunity during school, and that there are family & community Forums planned for April 29th (in-person), April 30th (virtual with a focus on Boston families), and May 1st (virtual). All stakeholders will be able to take a survey beginning on May 5th.
