Silverland Middle School's Fishing Club
The Silverland Middle School Fishing Club spent an unforgettable day at Lahontan Reservoir.
This wasn’t just a day of fishing. It was a day of career exploration, teamwork, and hands-on experience that gave students a deeper understanding of Nevada’s parks, natural resources, and the many careers that help preserve them.
Learning from Nevada State Parks
Students met Park Ranger Daniel Wassmund, who shared insights from his 12 years with Nevada State Parks. He spoke about the history of Lahontan Reservoir, what it takes to become a park ranger, and the skills needed for careers in conservation and outdoor recreation. Ranger Wassmund even joined the students on the shore, helping set up fishing poles and offering real-world tips throughout the day.
Powered by Community Support
The trip was made possible thanks to the incredible support of staff and community members.
Mr. Fellows provided fishing gear, bait, and a barbecue lunch while mentoring students by the water.
Stacy Karr and the cafeteria team prepared lunches for everyone.
Mrs. Manderbach and Mr. Gavin helped students learn to rig lines and cast safely.
Students worked together, cheered one another on, and showed amazing sportsmanship — all while gaining practical skills and confidence in a beautiful Nevada setting.
For these middle schoolers, the trip was about much more than fishing. Students practiced teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and respect for the environment — all while discovering how classroom learning connects to real Nevada careers.
The smiles said it all: every cast was a chance to learn something new.
