The Mustang Minutes
Keeping Families Connected, One Stride at a Time.

A Note from the Principal
Welcome Home, Mustang Families: There's No Place Like OLHMS!
Dear OLHMS Families,
Welcome to what promises to be an incredible school year at Oak Lawn Hometown Middle School, the proud home of the Mustangs! Tomorrow, we open our doors and welcome our scholars back, and I could not be more excited for the year ahead. I hope your family is rested, recharged, and ready for all of the opportunities and possibilities that await us!
I am truly honored to serve as the Proud Principal of OLHMS. At our core, we believe in “Creating a dream and making it a reality!” That vision drives everything we do and reminds us that our school should be a place where scholars don't simply attend school—they belong, grow, thrive, and discover what they are capable of becoming.
Last year, we challenged ourselves to LEVEL UP—to raise the bar, embrace challenges, and discover what we were capable of. This year, we celebrate the place that makes that growth possible: There Is No Place Like OLHMS! This is more than a theme. It is a mindset. It is a celebration of who we are as Mustangs and a commitment to making OLHMS a place where every scholar feels known, valued, challenged, and supported.
This year, we will:
- Grow academically, socially, and personally
- Lead with confidence, compassion, and responsibility
- Connect with one another and build meaningful relationships
- Celebrate our successes, our differences, and what makes our Mustang community special
Our incredible Mustang staff is energized, passionate, and ready to welcome your children tomorrow. We know that the first day of middle school—or the first day of a new grade level—can bring excitement, anticipation, and maybe even a few butterflies. Please remind your scholar that they do not have to have everything figured out on Day One. They simply need to show up, be themselves, and know that we are here to help them every step of the way.
As we begin this new school year, we will continue to live out our Mustang Musts everywhere we go:
Be Safe.
Be Responsible.
Be Respectful.
As a parent myself, I know how important these middle school years are. Thank you for trusting us with your most precious gifts—your children. Your partnership matters, and when our families and staff work together, there is truly no limit to what our Mustangs can accomplish.
So tonight, get some rest, set those alarms, pack those backpacks, and get ready to make some Mustang magic!
Tomorrow, we begin a brand-new chapter—and I cannot wait to see our hallways filled with the energy, laughter, and spirit of our Mustangs once again.
There is no place like OLHMS.
And there is no better place to be a Mustang!
Let's make this our best year yet.
With Mustang Pride,
Madalyn Laureto
Principal
Supply Drop-Off was a Success!
The first session of Supply Drop-Off was a huge success! What an incredible turnout of scholars and families coming to drop off supplies, meet their teachers, and reconnect with our school community. It was wonderful to see so many smiles and hear laughter filling the hallways again!
If your family and scholar is planning to attend the 6:00–7:30 p.m. Supply Drop-Off session, we can’t wait to see them! We’re looking forward to another great evening of reconnecting and getting ready for the year ahead.
We are so excited to welcome all of our scholars back tomorrow and officially kick off another amazing year at OLHMS!

We anticipate having schedules finalized by the end of the first full week of school.

This and That...
Student Device Repair Program:
Your student's device is protected against accidental damage, theft, fire, flood, natural disasters, power surge and vandalism. If your child’s device needs repair, below are the costs associated with each incident during a school year:

Free & Reduced Breakfast & Lunch Reminder
The federal program allowing districts across the country to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of income has expired. At this time, the federal government has not extended the waivers for this school year to allow free meals for all students. As a result, schools across the nation will be reverting back to free and reduced-price meals based on income eligibility guidelines set by theU.S. Department of Agriculture. Families who do not qualify for free or reduced breakfast or lunch will have to pay for school meals. Students whose families are eligible for free or reduced-price breakfast or lunch will be able to access meals this school year at no cost or a discounted rate. If you would like to apply for free or reduced priced meals, please click here. Here is the form for the breakfast in the classroom.
Health Examination and Immunization Requirements
There are specific requirements for students entering preschool, kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade, as well as for all new students. Visit our Health Forms & Guidelines page for more information. Please note that these vaccinations and/or health examinations are required by state law.
- All forms due October 15, 2026
- All incoming 6th Graders must have a physical and dental report on file.
- All 6th, 7th and 8th Graders interested in sports will need a sports physical to try out for teams.
No Cell Phone: Bell to Bell
As we get ready to welcome our scholars back, we want to share a quick reminder about one of our important school-wide expectations.
Cell phones, iPads, and smartwatches are not permitted in the learning environment. Scholars should have their personal devices turned off and securely stored in their lockers from arrival through dismissal.
This expectation helps us protect instructional time, minimize distractions, and give our scholars the opportunity to be fully present in their learning and relationships. We want our hallways, classrooms, and lunchroom to be spaces where scholars are learning, connecting, and engaging with one another—not their screens.
We also recognize that families may need to reach their children during the school day. If you have an urgent message or emergency, please contact the main office, and we will make sure your child receives the message. Scholars who need to contact home during the school day may request permission to use an office or classroom phone.
Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce this expectation. Together, we can create a focused, connected, and positive learning environment for all of our Mustangs!
