Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
September 18, 2026
Lutherville Families,
Another solid two weeks of learning at the Lab!
Students are aptly thriving in learning routines and last week did a great job with our first fire drill. This week we had a great time reconnecting with our community at Back to School Night to share what is ahead for our Leopards this school year.
More below, but a quick appeal here to please sign-up for the PTA's contact list. There are so many lovely community events that the PTA coordinates for students. Signing up for the contact list keeps you connected with important information and reminders to make sure your Leopard makes the most of their year.
This fall I am serving on Superintendent Heiser's Transition Team in support of a strong start to his tenure in BCPS. The Team is gathering community input to help shape our report, which will initiate development of a strategic plan for the school system for the next few years. Please consider taking a few minutes to complete the survey here.
Reminder that schools are closed for students on Monday 9/21. Have a great weekend. We look forward to seeing our Leopards again on Tuesday!
In partnership,

Back to School Night
Thank you to all the families who were able to join us on Tuesday for Back to School Night. It was great to celebrate our collective accomplishments and the school we have together. We hope the class/grade level information was helpful to make it a great year ahead!

School Counseling Newsletter
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As part of our School Counseling Program, your child’s class will have the opportunity to engage in monthly counseling lessons throughout the school year. In September, the theme is school success. The lessons will focus on students learning the name of the school counselor and their role in the school building. Additionally, the lessons will teach students strategies to be successful in school, such as goal setting, asking for help, and organization.
The following books/activities/resources will be used:
Pre-Kindergarten: How my school counselor helps me activity
Kindergarten: How my school counselor helps me activity
1st grade: Mrs. Joyce Gives the Best High Fives by Erainna Winnett
2nd grade: The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson
3rd grade: Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman
4th grade: Schoology and goal setting activity
5th grade: Schoology and goal setting activity
The goal of the monthly core curriculum counseling lessons is to help promote the social emotional, academic, and career development of our students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the program. I can be reached via phone at 443-809-7835 or via email at ikiewe@bcps.org.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Kiewe
Your Child's Grades & Attendance
Again this year, BCPS will be automating weekly reports to families sharing students grades (see above) and attendance (see below). This is an important way for parents to partner with us for your child's success! When these messages arrive on Fridays, please take just a few moments to scan the information.
If you did not receive these today to the email address "on file" in FOCUS, please check your "junk" or "spam" folders. If they are there, please mark the sender as trusted so that they come to your inbox moving forward.
Grades: This shows student achievement on graded assignments. Particularly, in grades 3-5, please scan for assignments marked missing and help your child complete and turn them in. As a reminder, students receive letter grades in Grades 4 & 5.
In grades K-3 the primary grade scale is:
CD - Consistently Demonstrating
The student acquires and applies the concept or skill consistently with minimal teacher support.
P - Progressing
The student acquires and applies the concept or skill frequently and needs additional teacher support at times.
N - Needs Improvement
The student acquires and applies the concept or skill rarely or does so with much more teacher support. Additional practice is needed.
NA - Not Applicable
Attendance: Below, please see an example of the weekly attendance email caregivers in the first contact slot in FOCUS should be receiving weekly. You can use this to track your child's attendance, notice if we did not receive or document and excuse note, and make sure your kiddo is not reaching 3 absences in a marking period so that they can make the 92%ers!

📚 November Literacy Month is Coming!
This year we're dedicating the entire month of November to celebrating literacy at Lutherville Lab.
Activities will include:
- Our annual Book Fair
- Read-A-Thon
- Special literacy-focused events and activities throughout the month
Help Every Child Leave with a Book
One of our favorite traditions is making sure every LL student can leave the Book Fair with a book they love, regardless of financial circumstances.
To make that possible, we are now collecting donations for our Book Drive. Your donations help put books directly into the hands of students and foster a lifelong love of reading.
We are in need of graphic novels and non fiction books (for Elementary ages) to complete our collection of free books. If you have books to donate, please contact Andrea Boecker to arrange drop off or pick up. (andreapice@hotmail.com of 443-388-0088 (cell). Only graphic novels and non-fiction books will be accepted. Deadline to donate is October 21.
Thank you for helping us make literacy accessible for every learner!
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and continuing to build a strong, connected, and welcoming Lutherville Lab community together! 💛🐾
