Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - June 1, 2026
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
As we enter the final weeks of the 2025–26 school year, it is hard to believe how quickly another year has passed. June is always an exciting time in our schools, filled with field days, concerts, celebrations, award ceremonies, graduation activities, and many other special events that mark important milestones for our students.
While these opportunities create lasting memories and are among the most enjoyable parts of the school year, they also bring changes to routines and schedules. For some students, these changes can make it more challenging to remain focused and make positive choices. We appreciate your partnership in reminding your children that our expectations for kindness, respect, responsibility, and positive behavior remain in place through the very last day of school. A simple conversation at home can help students finish the year strong and ensure that these final weeks are positive and productive for everyone.
Tomorrow evening's Board of Education meeting will include several special recognitions. We will celebrate the top 5% of the Newtown High School Class of 2026, recognizing their exceptional academic achievement and dedication. We will also honor our CABE Student Leadership Award recipients and recognize several outstanding educators and staff members who are retiring after years of dedicated service to Newtown Public Schools.
These celebrations are truly what makes Newtown Public Schools such a special place: talented students, dedicated staff, supportive families, and a community that values education. I remain grateful for the opportunity to work alongside all of you in support of our students and their success.
Enjoy the beautiful days ahead, and thank you for your continued partnership as we bring another successful school year to a close.
Anne

Newtown Public Schools Parent/Family Climate Survey
As we enter the final months of the school year, Newtown Public Schools, in accordance with Connecticut statutes, will seek to collect feedback through our annual School Climate Survey. The surveys will be given to students in grades 3-12, parents/families, and staff to gather input relating to experiences within our schools. The results will then be used by our administrative team to identify successes and set goals for improvement pertaining to school climate.
The survey is being administered through the Thought Exchange platform and the questions were developed in consultation with EdAdvance, our Regional Education Service Center. All questions are aligned to Connecticut State Climate Standards as required by statute. Each family survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and responses are anonymous. If you have children in multiple schools, please complete one survey per school. Your feedback is very important to us and we hope that you will take the time to share your thoughts.
The survey will remain open until June 5th. Please click on the link below to participate:

Awards and Scholarship Night
On May 28, 2026, students and parents gathered at Newtown High School for our Awards and Scholarship Night. The event recognized 119 different juniors and seniors for academic achievement and scholarship distribution.
The evening opened with Dr. Longobucco’s welcome, noting that this event is “invite only” and is meant to honor “the best of the best.” Paul Ribeiro, the event’s emcee, then moved on to introduce each award. Many community organizations were also there to present their scholarships. 90 different awards and scholarships were presented.
In total, more than $120,000 in scholarships was awarded to seniors, and juniors who won college book awards have the opportunity to claim nearly $900,000 in scholarships if they choose to apply and are accepted to the respective schools.
Spring Concerts at Sandy Hook & Head O'Meadow
In honor of our country’s 250th birthday, the fourth grade Spring Concerts were a celebration of The Great American Songbook. Students begin by performing the "Star Spangled Banner", and then continued with arrangements of jazz standards like “When the Saints Go Marching In” as well as hits from the musicals The Sound of Music and Betsy.
NHS sophomore, Sam Villagran, joined the concerts to play a trumpet solo.
The American theme was in connection with a music field trip that all Head O' Meadow and Sandy Hook 4th graders took in March to hear musicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC - an exciting way to inspire our youngest musicians in their choice of an instrument and ensemble for 5th grade.

Managing Negative Lunch Balances
In order to help families avoid the accumulation of large negative lunch balances, the district will be implementing the following steps:
-
At $25 or more: Parents/guardians will be notified by email.
-
At $50 or more: School personnel will contact you directly.
-
At $75 or more: A formal letter will be mailed home from the school.
-
If balances continue to grow without an effort to reconcile: Families will be contacted by the Central Office.
Please note: Students with a negative balance are not permitted to purchase a second lunch or snacks until the account is brought current.
Our goal is to support families in staying up to date with lunch accounts and to prevent larger debts from accumulating. By connecting families with school personnel, we hope to assist you in making online payments or, if eligible, applying for free and reduced-price lunch.
Click on the link for instructions on how to set up a MY SCHOOL BUCKS account so you can keep your account current.
