November 2025 Newsletter
Welcome to cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, and another wonderful month at Grand Prairie!
It’s hard to believe that October 24th marked the end of our first quarter. Student report cards will be sent home today, Friday, October 31st.
Grand Prairie is proud to celebrate Native American Heritage Month throughout November. Students will explore the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories, and important contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the United States. Be sure to ask your child about Alyssa Wapanatahk, “The Real Tiger Lily,” from Disney’s 2023 film Peter Pan and Wendy—a highlight of this month’s learning.
Safety continues to be a top priority at Grand Prairie. On Monday, November 10th, Officer Mineo will conduct the Run, Hide, Fight Drill with students and staff. Administration has worked closely with Officer Mineo to design developmentally appropriate scenarios that allow staff and students to practice choosing whether to run or hide, using calm and reassuring language.
Additionally, our school social workers will present the first of two Erin’s Law lessons on November 12th and 13th. Classroom teachers will communicate specific lesson dates for their students.
Our Veterans Day Assembly will take place on Tuesday, November 11th at 9:15 a.m. under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Brooke Turnbough. Second grade students have been working hard to prepare for this special event honoring local veterans. Veterans from the community are invited to attend and be celebrated!
In conjunction with this event, Grand Prairie will be collecting items for current service men and women. A detailed list of requested items was sent home this week and is also included below. Collection will take place Monday, November 3rd through Friday, November 14th.
Grand Prairie will dismiss at 11:25 a.m. on Friday, November 21st. Staff will then prepare for Parent/Teacher Conferences on Monday, November 24th and Tuesday, November 25th. Parents can sign up for a conference beginning November 7th at 10:00 a.m. through November 14th at 4:00 p.m. Conferences will once again offer both in-person and virtual options. The Meet the Teacher platform will be used for virtual conferences.

Second Grade
Second Graders Learn About Local Government
Our second graders have been busy learning all about government and the important roles of our local government. On October 24th, we are thrilled to welcome Mayor Ogle for a special visit. He will share how his role as mayor works closely with the police department, fire department, park district, and Village Trustees to help our community run smoothly. Students will also have the chance to ask questions and learn more about how local government serves the people of our town. Thank you, Mayor Ogle, for sharing your experience with our 2nd graders.
First Grade
First grade has been busy learning and exploring this month! In math, we’ve been practicing addition and subtraction and discovering how fact families help us see the relationships between numbers. In phonics, we’re learning all about digraphs, which includes those special pairs of letters like ch and sh that make one sound. During reading, we’ve been diving into nonfiction books and learning how to use text features such as headings, captions, and labels to better understand what we read. In writing, we have been learning how to write personal narratives.
We also had an exciting field trip to Navarro Farm, where we met chickens, pigs, goats, and bees, and learned all about vegetable gardens and how food grows. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that helped us connect our classroom learning to the world around us!
Kindergarten
Kindergarteners go to the pumpkin patch!
This October, Kindergarten students boarded the school buses for their very first field trip to Konow’s Corn Maze. We had such an exciting time getting to spend the day outdoors with all of the Grand Prairie Kindergarten classes.
Our field trip consisted of tractor rides, jumping into large corn bins, climbing through a tree house playground, petting farm animals, and SO many pumpkins! We are very appreciative of all the chaperones that joined us on this adventure and helped our field trip run so smoothly. The students loved ending our trip by getting to pick out their own small pumpkin to take home too!
Preschool
The month of October has introduced new themes as well as a new season—fall. We talked about the leaves changing colors, apples, trees, squirrels and pumpkins. Community helpers were introduced at the beginning of the month, and the students enjoyed learning about teachers, firefighters, mailmen, farmers, etc.… In the Early Childhood classroom, students pretended to go apple picking with our fake apple tree in the classroom and introduced ORANGE as our color of the month. Students have been introduced to different toy items that are the color orange (e.g., marker, carrot, orange, etc....) At home, playing with the leaves outside can be a fun way to increase language skills. For instance, when jumping or playing in the leaves you can grab different sizes or colors and talk about how the leaves are different. Also, create large or small piles of leaves and describe the piles (e.g., BIG pile, CRUNCHY leaves).
Library
Welcome to the 2026 Illinois Monarch Award Program! The Monarch nominees are a collection of books selected by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) for readers in grades K-3. Each year, AISLE selects 20 books and invites children from across the state to read the selected children’s books. The award is named in honor of Illinois’ state insect, the Monarch butterfly. The butterfly symbolizes growth, freedom, and change – qualities that also characterize the emergent reader.
Thank you to the Education Foundation for funding this amazing program at Grand Prairie!
Students will listen to some of the Monarch nominees in the coming months. Students in grades K-2 will hear at least five of these books during their library time. In mid-March, students will vote for their favorite. Their votes will then be added to the votes of other children throughout the state to determine the winning book.
You can keep track of the books your child has read by checking off the books on the bookmark he/she received during library. If your child completes the Monarch Book Challenge by reading all 20 of the books, he/she may return the bookmark to the Grand Prairie Library and choose a book from our prize book collection to keep!
Please sign or initial the top of the completed bookmark before your child returns it to school. Thank you!
Happy reading!
Mrs. Cunningham
