SEPTEMBER 2026 SEPTEMBER 2026

Message from the Principal Message from the Principal

Dear Coronado Elementary Families,

What a wonderful start we have had to the school year! Our students have settled into their classrooms, established new routines, and are already showing us just how much they are capable of learning and growing. It has been exciting to see students building friendships, taking on new challenges, and becoming more confident learners each day.

As we move into September, we want to continue building on this positive momentum. Every day is an opportunity for our students to learn something new, make a good choice, and grow a little more than they did the day before.

📚 Celebrating Academic Growth

During this time of year, our teachers are gathering important information about student learning through assessments such as the DIBELS reading screener and mClass Math screener. These assessments help us identify students' strengths and areas where they may need additional instruction or support.

Please know that these screeners are just one piece of the bigger picture. Our teachers use this information, along with classroom work, observations, and other assessments, to make instructional decisions and monitor student growth throughout the year.

We are excited to watch our students' progress and celebrate their accomplishments along the way!

⏰ Attendance & Being Ready to Learn

Now that our school routines are well underway, it is important that we continue to make regular, on-time attendance a priority. When students arrive late or miss school, they miss valuable instruction, classroom discussions, and learning experiences that can be difficult to make up.

Establishing consistent routines at home—such as regular bedtimes, organized mornings, and preparing for school the night before—can make a tremendous difference. When children arrive at school on time and ready to learn, they are starting their day with success!

đź“– Keep Reading at Home!

One of the simplest ways families can support learning at home is by reading together every day. Whether your child reads independently, you read aloud together, or you take turns reading pages, those few minutes make a difference.

Talk about the story, ask questions, make predictions, or simply enjoy a good book together. Reading at home strengthens literacy skills while also helping children develop a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their education.

🤝 We Welcome Our Volunteers!

We are so grateful for the families who support our school in so many ways. Parent and family volunteers are always welcome at Coronado Elementary! Your time and involvement help strengthen our school community and provide additional opportunities for our students and teachers.

If you are interested in volunteering, please remember to complete the Parent Volunteer Form available on the St. Johns Unified School District website at www.sjusd.net. Click on the "Come Work for Us" tab.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us and support your child's education. We are off to a fantastic start, and I am excited to see all the growth, learning, and accomplishments that are ahead for our students!

Let's make September another great month at Coronado Elementary!

Warmly,

Ms. Bond

Your voice matters! We invite parents, families, staff, and community stakeholders to join the Coronado Elementary School Site Council. Site Council provides an important opportunity for our school community to work together, share ideas, review school data, and have a voice in decisions that impact our students and school. Your input helps us identify areas for growth, celebrate our successes, and develop meaningful strategies to continue improving Coronado. When we work together, we can make a greater impact on student success! We encourage you to get involved, share your ideas, and be part of helping make Coronado Elementary an even better place for every student.

Our first meeting will take place on September 15th at 3:00pm in Room 2 at Coronado Elementary!

Looking at the DIBEL (Reading) data above, I just wanted to celebrate and point out that more than 50% of 1st graders, 2nd graders, and 3rd graders are currently reading at or above grade level, already in August! We've got some amazing readers here at Coronado.

Move On When Reading Move On When Reading

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In St. Johns Unified School District, our focus is on providing the best high-quality reading instruction to all students each day. Through a process called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), all kindergarten through third grade students are screened for reading difficulties and characteristics consistent with dyslexia in the fall, winter, and spring using mClass DIBELS 8th Ed. This universal screening process includes our English Learners and those who have a 504 and/or IEP. A universal literacy and dyslexia screener informs teachers of students on-track to meet the next grade-level benchmark and students who need more instruction in order to be on-track.

For students who need more than the Tier 1 (core) instruction, a deeper diagnostic assessment is given as soon as possible. Tier 2 (Strategic) interventions are started right away, working to close the gaps. A change in intervention curriculum, group size, frequency, duration and level of intensity may be needed. This Tier 3 (intensive) intervention may or may not be provided by the classroom teacher. The progress of all students receiving intervention is closely and frequently checked. Parents are essential to this entire process. Following the universal literacy and dyslexia screener and diagnostic assessments, you will be notified if your child is not at benchmark.

Despite the best efforts of schools to remedy students’ area of need, some students may not be able to attain the skills needed to make adequate progress in the general curriculum. If a disability is suspected as the underlying reason for this, a student may be referred for an evaluation. At any time, a parent can request an evaluation if they believe their child has a disability and requires specially designed instruction.

Arizona’s Move on When Reading (MOWR) legislation places great importance on this process beginning in kindergarten to ensure all students remain on track to be reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Arizona Revised Statute §15-701 states that if a student scores below the cut score on the reading portion of the 3rd grade statewide exam, he/she will not be promoted to the 4th grade until the student makes sufficient progress in reading proficiency. It is understood that each child is unique, therefore exemptions have been established for students to be promoted to 4th grade. Those exemptions are available at www.azed.gov/mowr.

A variety of factors, in and outside of school, can influence a child’s educational path and progress. It is important for parents to share in the educational journey, through constant communication and involvement. We encourage you to continue to highlight and celebrate your child’s strengths and share difficulties if they occur. Please reach out to us if you have any questions and we look forward to a successful school year.

Sincerely,

Courtney Bond
