Counselor's Corner
Hello GMS community,
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which provides us with an opportunity to recognize the importance of mental health and to remind our community that support is available for those who may be struggling. Suicide can be an especially difficult and uncomfortable topic to talk about, and avoiding the conversation can make it harder for young people to ask for help. As parents, caregivers, educators, and community members, we can help by creating an environment where students feel safe talking about difficult emotions and challenges without fear of judgment. Sometimes, simply asking how they are doing and being willing to listen can open the door to an important conversation.
The Colorado Office of School Safety offers many resources related to suicide prevention and awareness. The following summary highlights key points from the article, Teen Suicide: What Parents Should Know, including warning signs, ways to start conversations about mental health, and what caregivers can do if they are concerned about their student.
Middle school can bring many changes and challenges for young people, and caregivers play an important role in recognizing when their student may be struggling. While moodiness, irritability, and wanting more independence are normal parts of adolescence, significant or lasting changes can be warning signs that they are struggling.
Pay attention to changes such as feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, withdrawing from friends or activities, major changes in sleep, appetite, energy or motivation, increased substance use, or talking about suicide or self-harm. Caregivers know their students best, so noticeable changes from their usual behavior are worth taking seriously.
One of the most important things caregivers can do is talk openly with their students. Simple questions such as, “Are you okay?” or “How have things been going lately?” can create an opportunity for conversation. Listen without judgment, ask open-ended questions, and avoid immediately trying to solve the problem. Let them know that their feelings matter and that you are there to support them.
Please know that asking your student directly about suicide does not put the idea in their head or increase their risk. If they indicate that they are thinking about suicide, take them seriously, continue listening, and seek professional help. A pediatrician or mental health professional can help determine appropriate next steps.
Most importantly, everyone deserves to know that they do not have to face difficult times alone. Open communication, attentive listening, healthy mental-health habits, and early support can make an important difference.
For immediate crisis support in the United States, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Colorado Crisis Services offer free, confidential, 24/7 support. Call 1-844-493-TALK (8255) or text TALK to 38255 to get connected to assistance. If someone is actively self-harming or is about to do so, call 911 or seek emergency assistance.
