BE EPICER @ CTE
At Cherokee Trail we focus on six traits, teaching and fostering them in our classrooms and school-wide in order to create learners who are strong academically and socially.
They are:
ENTHUSIASM * PERSEVERANCE * INTEGRITY * COURAGE * EMPATHY * RESPECT
Read more on the EPICER page!
In APRIL we will be focusing on the EPICER trait of R-E-S-P-E-C-T:
* I listen carefully to adults and students and do not interrupt
* I show empathy when interacting with others
* I accept feedback and respond in a positive way
* I own my actions and make things right
* I use manners

FROM THE AP
With Spring Break behind us and the end of the school year not far off, it is time for state testing for students in grades 3-6. In Colorado that is CMAS, or Colorado Measures of Academic Success.
CMAS will start next Monday, April 6th and will run (for some students) through April 16th. We develop our testing schedule so that: students get their specials every day, and so students have to take no more than one test per day. Please see CTE's full Testing schedule here.
In order to support your student(s) we suggest the following:
- Please ensure that your student gets a good night's sleep before testing
- Please help your student make healthy choices for breakfast on the mornings of testing
- Please send a healthy snack to school with your student on their testing days
- Please double check with your student that they have headphones in their classroom that work (no bluetooth headphones are permitted)
- Finally, phones, smart watches, smart glasses, and other electronic devices are not permitted in the testing environment. Students who bring these devices to school will place them in a secure container and will not have access to them while testing. We value your partnership in this.
While CTE encourages all students to participate in these assessments, we recognize that CMAS may not be suitable for every student. Parents who wish to excuse their student from the state-mandated testing may do so by completing the official excusal form process, accessible here: Excusal Process.
Finally, further details regarding state-mandated testing can be found on the Cherokee Trail Elementaryβs website's State Mandated Testing Information page:
THE PRINCIPAL CHRONICLES
The Principal Chronicles continue ...
Here we are in the final quarter of the school year. The weather is turning nicer but then again, I think this year we may have bypassed Winter all together. Here at school, we have entered testing season. In a few weeks, we will be starting with our State-mandated testing (CMAS), and that will last about a week and a half, and then we have about a week of freedom before we move directly into our District mandated end of the year testing. By the time it is all done, it'll be May, and we will be in the final countdown of the year. This time of year goes even faster than all of the other times of the year. Having said that, once we get to May, it turns into one of the slowest months of the year. Most of our upper-grade classrooms right now are preparing for our State test. What I mean by preparing is getting kids ready for a completely quiet space, sitting for at least 60 minutes, and doing their best on the test. Although our school gets graded on our results, to us, it is just another data point that we can use to make our school better.
On the home front, it was a pretty quiet Spring break for me. With half of my family in Costa Rica and the other half in Mongolia, there was not a lot happening here in the state of Colorado for us lame folks that aren't world travelers. I essentially just worked out and spent as much time in the sunshine as I could.
My daughter got home last night and literally talked my ear off until nearly 11 PM. For my loyal readers, that is roughly 45 hours past my bedtime, and holy cow, did she have to unload a bunch of information. She walked in the door and started talking and storytelling non-stop for like three hours. It was actually fairly amazing because while she was talking, she also managed to eat chicken fingers and fries that seemed to magically appear out of nowhere. So to sum up her entire three-hour conversation: she had fun, good food, and the place where they stayed was nice. Apparently, that is all Costa Rica has to offer.
That is it for this week's episode, stay tuned for next week when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
