Ballot Question 2 and MCAS
Last wee, Massachusetts voters passed Question 2, which eliminates using MCAS as the high school graduation requirement (what the state calls the "competency determination"). There are some things that we know now, and some things that we await further guidance from the state on.
- High school MCAS will no longer be used for the competency determination starting with the Class of 2025. Students who have already met the competency determination through MCAS will carry that forward.
- The state will get back to us soon on the process of using "course passing" to replace the MCAS as the competency determination. At this point, we do not know which courses the state will accept for this purpose.
- High school MCAS will still be given each year in Biology, ELA 10, and Math 10. The MCAS will still "count" for school ratings with the state, but it will not count toward graduation. Obviously, it's still important for students to do their best on the high school MCAS tests.
- The John and Abigail Adams Scholarships will still be based upon high school MCAS performance. These are renewable scholarships if a graduating student attends a Massachusetts state college or university.
As more guidance is received from the state, we will keep you informed!
Thanksgiving Break
Next Interim Grade Report: Friday, Nov. 29
The next Interim Grade Report will be issued on Friday, November 29 -- yes, over Thanksgiving Break! Please note: initial participation for winter activities (winter sports, bowling, the musical) will be determined by the November 29th interim grade report.
The rules are different for middle school and high school:
- Middle school students must be passing ALL courses on their interim grade report to participate in co-curricular activities;
- High school students must be passing AT LEAST 5 courses on their interim grade report to participate in co-curricular activities.
