A Wonderful Fall at Douglas Gardens

There is something really special about this time of year at Douglas Gardens. Our school feels full of energy, laughter, and excitement, and I love seeing our students learning, growing, and simply enjoying being together.

We have already had some wonderful moments this fall—from cheering each other on at the Jog-A-Thon to seeing students and families participate in Walk, Bike, Ride to School Day. And we have so much more fun ahead! Our first Spirit Day—Silly Hair Day—is coming up, and I can't wait to see the creativity and smiles it brings to our school.

We are also looking forward to the OMSI Science Festival, PTO Harvest Party, and Picture Day, along with all the other special moments that make this time of year so memorable.

These events may seem like small pieces of the school year, but they are the moments that help create a strong sense of belonging. I love watching our students cheer each other on, try new things, laugh together, and make memories with their friends.

Thank you to our families, staff, PTO, and community partners who help make these experiences possible. I feel incredibly fortunate to be your principal and to share these special moments with our students and families.

With appreciation,
Carla Smith
Principal, Douglas Gardens Elementary

Attendance: Every Day Matters Attendance: Every Day Matters

As we continue our work to improve attendance at Douglas Gardens, we want to thank our families for partnering with us. Regular attendance is one of the most important ways we can support student learning and success. When students are at school consistently, they have more opportunities to learn, practice important skills, build relationships, and stay connected to their classroom community.

Our PBIS Team recently met to develop ways to recognize and celebrate students who are making regular attendance a priority. We are excited to introduce several attendance incentives throughout the school year!

Students who maintain 90% or better attendance will have opportunities to:

  • Enjoy special extra recesses throughout the year with other students who have maintained 90% attendance.

  • Be recognized during pod celebrations for their commitment to being at school.

  • Receive attendance certificates and brag tags as a way to celebrate their accomplishment.

We hope these celebrations encourage students to see the value of being at school every day possible. Attendance is a team effort, and we need your help! Please make regular, on-time attendance a priority for your family whenever your child is healthy enough to attend.

If your family is experiencing a challenge that is making it difficult for your child to attend school regularly, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher. We want to partner with you and help whenever we can.

Every day matters. Every student matters. Thank you for helping your child be here, ready to learn!

To keep our car rider line moving safely and efficiently, please pull all the way down to the gate near the crosswalk. For everyone's safety, please remain in your vehicle and have your student enter or exit from the passenger side. If your student needs an extra hand with their seatbelt or car seat, feel free to park your car and walk them to or from the gates. Finally, please help us be good neighbors by keeping local driveways, yellow curbs and mailboxes completely clear. Thank you for your cooperation!

School Safety: ALICE Training School Safety: ALICE Training

The safety of our students and staff is always a priority at Douglas Gardens Elementary. Springfield Public Schools uses a nationally recognized safety approach called ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) to prepare for a dangerous intruder emergency.

ALICE is supported by many law enforcement agencies, including our local department. It provides individuals with strategies and options to help them make informed decisions during an emergency.

All district staff receive training in these procedures, and classroom instruction for students will begin soon. Lessons will be age-appropriate and designed to help students understand these safety strategies. Similar to fire and earthquake drills, students will also practice these procedures so they can become familiar with the expectations and responses.

Our goal is to help students develop an understanding of school safety procedures in a calm, supportive, and developmentally appropriate way while ensuring they know that keeping students safe is always our top priority.
