GPS Summer Shark Splash 🌊
Greenwich Public Schools ESY and Summer Programs 2025 Newsletter
Week Four included lots of good weather and fun activities at our GPS Summer Programs. Our students and staff continue to demonstrate curiosity, courage, and compassion as “summer sharks” at New Lebanon and Western Middle Schools.
Elementary Math
Our students at New Lebanon are engaging in Big Ideas math activities and reinforcing their skills through IXL this summer. See Ms. Elmlinger’s first graders doing great math work!
Visit to the New Lebanon Community Garden
Ms. Lazarev’s kindergarten class took a trip to the New Lebanon community garden to learn about all the wonderful things that are growing this year. They helped water the plants and even picked some of the ripe vegetables as they explored outside. We are grateful to the New Lebanon PTA for supporting the garden club initiative and sharing it with students this summer.
English Language Learners in Action
Students in our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program are enthusiastic and focused this summer. This week, our elementary students in Ms. Lattimer’s classroom engaged in small-group reading activities and grammar lessons while our secondary students in Ms. Myhro’s classroom collaborated to identify and highlight key words in their texts.
🦈 Week 4: Shark Week Recap
This week, our students dove into all things shark. We adopted real Atlantic white sharks tagged by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and practiced our map skills by tracking their movements across the ocean. In our elementary and secondary classrooms, students explored shark-themed books and practiced nonfiction writing, bringing these fascinating creatures to life through literacy.
We wrapped up the week with a school-wide Rock-Paper-Scissors challenge, building communication and social skills in a fun, friendly competition. Throughout the week, students reflected on what it truly means to be a Summer Shark—demonstrating curiosity, courage, and compassion. 💙
Some students even completed our Summer Shark Challenge and earned official certificates. Keep an eye out—your child may come home proudly wearing a “Compassionate,” “Courageous,” or “Curious” shark sticker!

Half-Day Summer School Camp at the YMCA
Are you looking for something your children can do after our summer school day is over? The YMCA has a program designed just for our students where they can join a camp in the afternoon. We have a bus that goes directly to the YMCA after school. Head to the YMCA website for more information.
📚 Family Challenge: Get Ready for Reading Challenge Week!
Our summer Reading Challenge Week is here. Take a family trip to your local library and check out a bag full of books to enjoy together.
If your child does not have a library card yet, we are happy to help. Did you know that Mr. Silkman’s mom works at the Byram Shubert Library across the street from New Lebanon School? Stop in and say you are a summer shark! Additionally, all birth to PreK children are invited to “Storytime with Patty” on Tuesday, July 29 from 11:00-11:30 AM.
