Inspired Learning Day!
Principal Update 3/10/25
Good Morning Memorial Families,
I hope that the weekend was terrific. I sent my son back to college last night after his first spring break. It is hard for me to believe that he will be done with his freshman year in just 5 weeks. And this coming August I will be sending three of them off to school all at once. While we have more than five weeks left in the school year, we really are gearing up for the final push to summer around here.
Last week's Inspired Learning Day was absolutely amazing. We had puppies, business owners, and trips to the Upton police and fire stations in addition to other awesome sessions focused on robotics and engineering, designing a play, creating a store, and some students even got to create murals for the school. All in all, we had so much fun, and reflected on the many ways we had to use collaboration, innovation, reflection, communication, and global thinking to have success throughout the day. We look forward to our second ILD in June to end the school year.
This week we will be trying something new to Memorial. We have a half day early release, and our student council has proposed that we enact a play day (well, morning). On Friday, students will have the freedom within their grade to play what they like, with whom they like. There are only a few "rules". The first rule is that we will have a screen-free morning, so no electronic devices. The second rule is that students need to use their problem solving skills to work through moments of "boredom" or moments of disagreement with peers. Teachers will not be structuring the playtime, it will be up to your children. If there is a favorite game, or a favorite imaginative play toy that your child enjoys, and you want to send it in with your child on Friday, you may do so.
As a reminder, Friday IS an early release day, and we will begin dismissal at noon so that our teachers can engage in professional development.
Have a terrific week!
Warmly,
Wendy
