Honoring a Roosevelt Student’s Path to Public Service
Every so often, a decisive moment shows us exactly why Career Technical Education makes a difference. Recently, Mr. Candias, our RCOE Law Enforcement Instructor at Roosevelt High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, received a message that clearly demonstrates how CTE pathways shape students’ futures.
One of his former students, Nathan Duenas, reached out shortly after completing U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His words reflect not only his pride in achieving a significant milestone but also the meaningful influence of the Public Services pathway and the mentorship he received along the way.
“Mr. C! I am an American soldier! Thank you for putting me on this path. This has been the greatest honor. Please keep inspiring more young minds to find their potential. Thank you for the opportunity and for inspiring me to be here.”
Nathan expresses gratitude, determination, and an unmistakable sense of purpose in his message. During his time in the Public Service pathway, he built valuable life and career skills, discipline, leadership, teamwork, communication, and resilience that prepared him for military service and the challenges that come with it.
His success is a shining example of how CTE programs empower students to discover their strengths, build confidence, and pursue careers that make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.
We are incredibly proud of Nathan and deeply appreciative of the dedicated educators and staff who continue to guide, support, and inspire students pursuing service-driven pathways. His journey honors the spirit of public service and stands as a testament to the transformative power of career education.
Pathway Highlights: Welding & Product Innovation
We’re excited to share some standout moments from our Welding and Product Innovation Pathways, where students continue to push boundaries in design, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
Recently, Xavier Zepeda, serving as our SkillsUSA Technical Director, showcased his growing expertise by using the Faro live 3D scanner to capture a detailed scan of a tungsten holder he designed and produced on our 3D printer. His work reflects the level of innovation and technical precision our students strive for each day.
Meanwhile, our Elite Techs third-year Product Innovation students, Daniel Salazar and Isreal Martinez, took part in a collaborative peer evaluation of their reverse-engineered GTAW aerospace tool holders. Their commitment to refining complex designs highlights the advanced skill development taking place within the program.
These projects demonstrate the creativity, problem-solving skills, and technical mastery that our students are cultivating as they prepare for careers in cutting-edge industries. We look forward to sharing more of their accomplishments as the year continues.
Students Gain Clinical Experience at Riverside Community Hospital
Donna Kilbreath’s medical assisting students are currently completing their externship hours at Riverside Community Hospital, where they are gaining valuable hands-on experience in a fast-paced healthcare environment. During their externships, students learn essential patient care skills, observe clinical procedures, and work alongside medical professionals in a hospital setting. This real-world training allows students to apply classroom knowledge, build confidence, and further prepare for successful careers in the medical field.
Inside Mr. Alvarez’s Automotive Technology Program
Students in Mr. Alvarez’s Automotive Technology program at Paloma Valley High School are gaining valuable, hands-on experience as they build a strong foundation in the essentials of automotive service. This Career Technical Education course introduces them to practical shop skills, diagnostic methods, tool safety, and routine service procedures and core competencies that reflect the expectations of today’s automotive workplaces.
Throughout the year, students participate in structured, real-world learning activities that encourage critical thinking and teamwork. Whether they are identifying mechanical issues, learning proper equipment usage, or performing maintenance tasks, each lesson reinforces both technical knowledge and workplace readiness.
What truly sets the class apart is its focus on developing confidence and problem-solving abilities. Students are not only learning how to service vehicles but also gaining an understanding of industry standards, safety protocols, and professional practices. These experiences equip them with the skills needed to pursue future opportunities in the automotive technician field.
Mr. Alvarez’s class offers a genuine insight into a thriving and continually evolving industry. By combining classroom instruction with practical application, the program helps students take meaningful first steps toward technical careers and inspires them to explore the numerous pathways available within the automotive industry.
SCE Internship Programs: Learning Beyond the Classroom
As the seasons transition into a time of rest, the School of Career Education (SCE) programs move into an equally important phase of learning: internships. Through strong community partnerships, students are allowed to translate classroom theory into practical, hands-on skills that meaningfully support their post-secondary and career pathways.
Under the guidance of instructor Fortress Ndlovu, IT Help Desk Professional students are placed at internship sites that both enhance their technical learning and benefit from the students’ growing expertise. Likewise, Medical Assistant instructor Rebecca Bravo supports her students as they enter fast-paced healthcare settings, where they demonstrate their skills and professionalism in real-world medical offices.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our valued partners, Coachella Valley Foot and Ankle, Clinica Médica Del Valle, Heart Institute Medical Center, and Desert Oasis Health Care-Immediate Care, for welcoming our students, sharing their expertise, and helping shape the next generation of professionals.
A Year of Growth: Pre-Apprenticeship Program Reaches Record Enrollment
As we close out December, our county has surpassed an exciting milestone: more than 2,400 students are now registered pre-apprentices with the California Department of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS). This achievement underscores our ongoing commitment to expanding high-quality, career-connected learning experiences for students throughout the region.
Each registered pre-apprentice is actively participating in an Advanced or Capstone course within their Career Technical Education pathway, representing fields such as Building Trades, Public Services, Education, Transportation, and Mechatronics. This broad participation reflects the growing enthusiasm among students as they prepare for future careers.
This year’s total marks a significant increase from last year’s 1,400+ registered pre-apprentices. The continued growth highlights both the strong engagement of our students and the dedication of educators and partners who make these opportunities possible.
As we begin the new year, we extend our sincere appreciation to all who continue to support this vital work. We wish you a warm and joyful season and a wonderful year ahead from the Pre-Apprenticeship Team.
