Updates after Week 6 - 10/2/26

Today we announced our first Leaders of the Month for this year! Each month, students will be nominated for demonstrating that month's habit. Students were honored today with a certificate and will get a treat at lunch on Monday. For September, our focus habit was Habit 1: Be Proactive. When students are proactive they recognize their emotions, pause before they act, take initiative, act responsibly, and make positive choices.

For the month of October, we will look for students demonstrating Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. This habit requires us to understand what is important, set goals and make plans to meet them, stay focused and persevere to reach goals. Here are some really simple questions you can use to support this habit in everyday conversations with your child!

  • How do you want to feel at the end of the school week?
  • If you could accomplish one big thing this semester/year, what would make you proudest?
  • What skills do you need to learn to get where you want to be?
  • If you make this choice today, what will happen tomorrow or next week because of it?

Free Health Clinics

In partnership with the City of Chicago and City Colleges, the district is offering free health clinics for CPS students. If your child still needs a physical vaccinations - or there are additional health needs for your child - please consider attending this free health- event. Walk ins are accepted, but you can also register ahead at https://prism/org/ccc or by calling 800-325-1812. The next clinic is this weekend (October 3rd) at Kennedy-King College with additional nearby opportunities on October 24th at Arturo Velasquez Institute or December 5th at Ricard J. Daley College.

Picture Day

Student Picture Day is Friday, October 9th! Students can come out of uniform. Parents will have an option to order their child's pictures. Picture orders with payment are due on the day of picture day. Your child should have already brought an order form home. Please reach out to the main office if you need a new order form. Make up day will be on October 23rd if needed.

Sabor de Brighton Park

Save the date for our annual Sabor de Brighton Park on Friday, October 9th at 4:30. This takes place during Hispanic Heritage Month and we invite all of our families to bring dishes that are family favorites. This is a chance to build community, share food, and enjoy each other's company. Everyone is welcome and we will have a sign up sheet in the main office to bring a dish. Mark your calendars, we hope to see you there!

Student Technology Use

You are likely aware that both the district and school budgets are very tight. During the pandemic and proceeding years we have built up our inventory of iPads and Chromebooks to provide a device to each student during the school day. These devices are now reaching the end of their life and breaking more frequently. In the past, when students were responsible for damaging a device we did not ask families to pay a repair fee. We will avoid enforcing this policy as much as possible, but we do want to elevate to families that if students are responsible for device damage, we may request a family fee as outlined in our technology agreement.

Parent Storytelling Workshops

We are very excited to bring a very special workshop for parents to Brighton Park this year. In partnership with the Aquinas Literacy Center, we will be offering story telling workshops. Our stories are important and make our community special. This workshop will help us explore and tell our own stories. By the end of the year we hope to have a collection of these stories that represent our unique and powerful school community! We hope you will join us. These workshops will be on the first Wednesday of the month starting at 8:30 in our parent room. The first session is on Wednesday, October 7th.

Student uniform

Our uniform policy helps students stay focused on their learning and represent our school community. Showing up in uniform each day shows that our students are ready to learn. Our uniform policy is flexible with several options for students, but all students must be in uniform each day. Additionally we have had more students wearing crocs to school. This does present a safety concern, especially for recess and PE. Please ensure your child is wearing close toed shoes each day, students may not be allowed to patriciate in PE without proper footwear.
