SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The College Board honored Mr. Markus, an AP Capstone teacher at Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA), along with PMSA, as one of just five schools selected to participate in the inaugural Illinois AP Day at the Capitol on March 19.

Mr. Markus was joined by Dr. Mason, assistant principal, and five exceptional PMSA students, who had the opportunity to engage with prominent state leaders, including:

  • Kwame Raoul, Illinois Attorney General

  • Chris Welch, Illinois Speaker of the House

  • Kimberly Lightford, Illinois Senate Majority Leader

  • Dr. Rhonda Dawson, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for the Illinois State Board of Education

The students were formally recognized by both the Illinois House and Senate on the Capitol floor for their dedication, leadership, and academic achievements. Following the recognition, they attended a committee meeting focused on school safety measures and observed a speech about the importance of implementing more rigorous coursework in high school curricula. They also had the opportunity to ask insightful questions, further demonstrating their commitment to academic excellence.

The five students, all currently enrolled in Mr. Markus' AP Research course, have successfully met the requirements for the AP Capstone program and will graduate with distinction this May. Representing some of PMSA’s brightest minds, these outstanding seniors are:

  • Diego Calderon

  • Ricardo Fernandez

  • Kaylianna Lewis

  • Cameron Neely

  • Ariana Williams

The experience was both rewarding and inspiring for all involved. The students' hard work and dedication to their AP Research projects continue to earn them well-deserved accolades. Their participation in Illinois AP Day at the Capitol not only highlighted their academic excellence but also showcased PMSA’s commitment to fostering future leaders.
