Principal's Message
September was a busy and exciting month at Read Elementary! Our Rockets completed their first units of math and literacy, and students participated in i-Ready Math and Literacy assessments and Aimsweb literacy assessments to help us better understand their strengths, growth, and next steps for learning. Families can learn more about i-Ready and how to understand their child’s results in our Understanding i-Ready: A Family Guide for Elementary linked here. We also had plenty to celebrate! Our 4th graders took to the water for their sailing field trip, & we smiled big for Picture Day.
Finally, we are sending lots of love and well wishes to Nurse Mel as she begins her maternity leave and prepares to welcome her new baby! ❤️ While she is away, we are happy to welcome Nurse Kendra, who will be supporting Read as our Substitute Health Assistant. Crystal Manders, RN, has been supporting our nursing team while Nurse Kimberly Salsieder is on maternity leave.
October is already off to an exciting start! Our “Somos Semillas” mural project is underway, giving our students the opportunity to help create a beautiful piece of art that will become a lasting part of Read Elementary. We can’t wait for our families to see the finished product!
This month, our SAEBRS assessment window also remains open. SAEBRS is a brief social, academic, and emotional behavior screener that helps our school team identify students’ strengths and recognize where students may benefit from additional support. Just as our academic assessments help us understand what students need instructionally, SAEBRS gives us another piece of information to help us support the whole child and create safe, supportive learning environments.
Finally, a calendar reminder: There is no school on Friday, October 23 for Fall Break. 🍁
We’re looking forward to another month of learning & connection, Integrity, Safety, Engagement & Excellence! ❤️🚀

The Bus Lane
🚌 The Bus Lane 🚌. Pick up & Drop off Procedures
Thank you, Read families, for helping us keep our bus lane clear during arrival and dismissal! ❤️🚀 We know the signage isn’t as noticeable as it needs to be yet, and we are working on getting bigger, better signs to make the area easier to identify.
As a reminder, our bus lane is located along Algoma Blvd. and extends 8 parking spaces in length -nearly the entire block in front of Read. We know it can be tempting to pull into one of those open spaces, especially during busy arrival and dismissal times, but we need to keep the entire area clear so our buses can safely pull in and out.
For student pick-up and drop-off, please use the back parking lot, which serves as our family pick-up and drop-off loop.
Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and for helping us keep arrival and dismissal safe and running smoothly for all of our Rockets! 🚀❤️

Reminders
School Treats
Here’s what the Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) says about students bringing birthday treats to school:
Edible treats (food) are not allowed to be brought in for birthdays under district policy. This applies in elementary schools and is part of the district’s effort to support healthy habits and address food-safety/allergy concerns.
Instead of food treats, students may bring a small, tangible non-food item to share, such as pencils, stickers, or small toys (e.g., glow sticks, erasers). These non-food items are permitted as birthday “treats” for classmates.
Some schools specifically note that teachers will still celebrate birthdays in class (e.g., singing, games, recognition) but no food treats are allowed.
Students at Read receive the gift of a birthday book of their choice from a selection in the office.
Why This Policy? This approach helps support healthy eating habits, minimize food-allergy and safety issues, ensure all students can participate equally, regardless of dietary needs.
Breakfast
- School Breakfast is served in the gym/cafeteria from 7:15-7:40a.m.
- When students arrive to eat breakfast, they enter Door 1 at the main entrance or Door 5 which is located by the drop off/pick up loop located in the back of the building.
Students transition quietly & safely to classrooms at 7:40a.m.
Attendance begins promptly at 7:45a.m.
Breakfast service for students arriving late ends at 8:00a.m.
Classrooms are cleaned up and free of breakfast materials by 8:30a.m.
Playground Equipment
We provide equipment for play during recess. Students are NOT permitted to bring
recess equipment from home (i.e. balls, jump ropes, toys, chalk, bubbles). Read Elementary is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items brought from home.
Field Trips
We have updated our field trip procedures to streamline communication and improve the administrative process for families. Please review the key details below:
One-Time Blanket Permission: Parents provide consent for all field trips during Annual Online Registration, covering the entire academic year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027).
Automatic Opt-In Status: Once online registration is completed, students are automatically opted-in for scheduled field trips.
Managing Specific Trips: Upon receiving notification of an upcoming trip, log into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and visit the School Store to submit payments or opt out of that specific event.
Strict Deadlines: All payments and opt-out requests must be completed at least two weeks prior to the trip date. For extenuating circumstances, please contact your school secretary promptly.
Mandatory Registration: Completing Annual Online Registration is required for field trip participation. Students with incomplete registrations will not appear in the School Store system.
