The Riverwalk Roar
March 29, 2026
A Note from Dr. Compton
Happy Sunday, Pride!
I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing weekend. It was a little chilly (for Spring), but at least it was sunny and beautiful.
As we move deeper into the spring season, with performances, competitions, testing, and celebrations, I’ve been reflecting on something that makes Riverwalk Academy truly special.
Riverwalk has never been about any one student, one classroom, or one staff member. It is about all of us, the collective strength of our Pride. Every day, our teachers, coaches, and staff are working to create opportunities for students to grow, to lead, and to shine, but always within the context of a larger community.
That means we celebrate individual successes, but we do not exist to elevate one student above others. We exist to ensure that every student has access to meaningful opportunities, and that those opportunities are distributed in ways that are fair, thoughtful, and rooted in what is best for the entire school community.
At times, that can be hard. Not every student will get every role, every spotlight, or every opportunity they may hope for, and that’s true in school, in athletics, and in life. But what our students gain here is far more valuable: resilience, teamwork, perspective, and the ability to contribute to something bigger than themselves. We’re not “lawnmowers” that remove adversity. Instead we intentionally allow students to experience challenge so they can grow from it.
That is what it means to be part of The Pride.
When we keep that focus, on community, on growth, and on shared success, we ensure that Riverwalk remains a place where every student belongs and every step forward is something we take together.
Speaking of shared success, as we’ve previously shared, Riverwalk Academy has been named a finalist for the NIET Founder’s Award. We will find out this Wednesday if we are selected as the 2026 recipient. As a finalist, we have already been awarded $10,000, and the national recipient will receive $50,000.
We are excited for Wednesday, but whether we are named the recipient or remain a finalist, I’ll be taking the photo above with me as a reminder of our “why.”
That photo represents who we are.
Yes, somewhere in that group of 800 students is a senior with the highest GPA. Somewhere in that group is a state champion in cross country. And somewhere in that group is a student who just won a gold medal at the Special Olympics bowling tournament.
But also in that photo is the student who didn’t get it right the first time—or the second—but kept showing up, kept learning, and kept improving. It’s the student who has wrestled with social anxiety and persevered alongside her third-grade PBL group, finding her voice and becoming a meaningful contributor to an outstanding student-led project. It’s the athlete who may have finished last at each track meet this season, but who continues to achieve a personal best, steadily improving with each race.
And in that same photo are 60 incredible teachers, three of whom may be named Teachers of the Year, but all of whom show up each day committed to their students, their teams, and this community.
That is The Pride. Not one story, but all of them.
In Pride and Purpose,

Photo of the Week
High school students Lilly Carr, Annie Carney, and Emma Cabe (from our yearbook elective) had the opportunity to pitch their yearbook distribution proposal to several members of our leadership team. At Riverwalk Academy we highly value the autonomy of learning experiences such as this that allow for real world application within our school community.
