AMI DAYS

If the district needs to use an AMI (Alternative Method of Instruction) day due to weather or other circumstances, this information will be shared at the same time we announce a school closure. Students should keep their AMI packets at home so they are ready when needed. As part of our plan, students are allowed five school days to complete and return the work in order to be counted present for that day. If you ever have questions about AMI expectations, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Here is the link outlining our plans. AMI PLAN

Where can a weather demonstration on air pressure involve water balloons and fire? Well, Mrs. Brauer’s Science Lab, of course. Sixth grade is diving into a weather unit, and students are exploring how air pressure plays a powerful role in the world around us. Through exciting (and carefully supervised) experiments, they’re seeing firsthand how changes in pressure can create movement, force, and even surprising reactions.

By using hands-on demonstrations, students are learning that air may be invisible, but it is definitely not powerless. Activities like these help bring science concepts to life and show how the forces that shape our weather can be observed on a small scale right in the lab.

Science is in the air at ELS — and curiosity is on fire!

FLASHLIGHT FRIDAYS

You might walk into second grade on a Friday and find the lights off, students curled up with books and reading by flashlight. Second graders are working to build reading stamina — the ability to stay focused on a book and keep our brains engaged for longer periods of time. Just like muscles get stronger with practice, so do reading skills. The more students read, the better they get at understanding stories, learning new words, and making sense of what they read. Independent reading time helps students grow in confidence, attention, and comprehension. Flashlight Friday makes reading feel exciting, but the goal is simple and powerful: the more we read, the stronger readers we become.

STEAM: Simple Machines

In STEAM, our fourth graders put their engineering brains to work by designing and building Simple Machine Playgrounds — and the results were incredible! Students used their knowledge of simple machines like levers, pulleys, inclined planes, wheels and axles, screws, and wedges to create playground designs where each part had a purpose. They didn’t just build something fun to look at — they had to explain how each machine worked and how it made work easier.

This project was a powerful mix of science, creativity, and problem-solving. Students planned, tested ideas, made adjustments, and thought like real engineers. Hands-on learning like this helps students see that science isn’t just something you read about — it’s something you can build, test, and experience. And clearly, our fourth graders are more than ready to engineer amazing things!

“How do you know 53 is the largest number?”

This kind of question that sounds small at first. Just a few numbers on a page. But in Mrs. Taylor’s first grade classroom, it is an opportunity for students to figure out not just what they know, but how they know it. Our first graders are learning that math isn’t just about getting the answer — it’s about making sense of numbers and being able to explain their reasoning. When they write in math, they are doing more than solving a problem. They are building language, strengthening their thinking, and learning how to communicate ideas clearly. Great job first grade!

A visit from MoDOT

Recently, we connected our classroom learning to the real world when Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) visited our 3rd and 6th graders to share how weather affects their work and our community. Students learned how MoDOT responds during:

  • Flooding

  • Heavy winds

  • Snow and ice

  • Road damage caused by severe weather

MoDOT explained how they prepare roads, keep travelers safe, and respond quickly when storms cause problems. Seeing a real snow plow up close helped students connect what they learn about weather to the people who help keep our roads safe. And the sweet science bonus? Students even made rock salt ice cream, discovering how salt lowers the freezing point — another awesome weather connection!

Days like this remind us how grateful we are for the partnerships that help our students see learning beyond the classroom walls. When school and community come together, learning becomes meaningful, memorable, and connected to real life

Graphing Gummies!

Our Pre-K students have been busy working their brains while graphing with gummy bears! Students sorted by color, counted, compared groups, and talked about which had more, less, or the same. Hands-on activities like this build early math skills, strengthen thinking, and make learning fun and memorable. Sweet treats + smart thinking = a great day in Pre-K!

Family Dance

We hosted our second annual FAMILY DANCE for our PK-5 students. It might have been chilly outside, but inside the students were bringing the heat with their dance moves. The Cougar Ball 2026 was a great night of family fun!

Monster Madness Drawing Contest Winner

A few of our Art Club students entered a Monster Madness drawing contest put on by the Young Artists organization. Winners of the contest could win a monetary prize for their Art Club and/or have their monster creation published! Our Sawyer Crusha entered "Heartsey" and won a place in an upcoming Young Artists book. Congratulations Sawyer!

Sawyer shared that she had so much fun creating her monster, Heartsey. She began by drawing a heart and then transformed it into a person by adding arms and legs. Next, she gave Heartsey a cute shirt, a skirt, and painted nails. She described Heartsey as a kind monster! Sawyer said she was "Very excited!" when she heard she had won and that her drawing would be published.

Have you heard of Artsonia?

Every student at East Lynne has an account made by our art teacher, Mrs. Mehrhoff. She uses the account as an online portfolio to track student growth. You can access your student account by signing up with your email, and you can share their account with family and friends. This account is secure and does not share any personal student data. If you need access, please email Mrs. Mehrhoff (kaycie.mehrhoff@elynne.k12.mo.us). Besides keeping up with what they're creating in class, families and friends can order keepsakes with student artwork printed on them. 20% of the proceeds come back to our art program and help with purchasing materials.
