An opportunity for academically skilled English language learners

ENG 1055- Language and Power (3 credits)

ENG 1055 Language and Power (Intercultural Communication) is a 3-credit course offered through the VTSU Department of Arts, Humanities, and Communication, which is designed for juniors and seniors who want an early, confidence building college experience through summer dual enrollment.

You will explore how language politics shape everyday life, from language learning and use in society to language evolution, extinction, acquisition, and the ways language reflects cultural and political power. Through an intercultural communication lens, we focus on culture, identity, verbal and nonverbal communication, English development, globalization, and cross-cultural conflict management, while learning to spot ethnocentrism, bias, and stereotypes and replace them with evidence and perspective taking. Because the course is also built to support ESL and multilingual learners, we practice academic literacy skills that matter in college: close reading, discussion moves, and clear writing that makes your ideas understandable across language levels. You will learn by doing, including, but not exclusively, a cultural artifact presentation where you unpack the meaning of an object, text, recipe, song, film, or other artifact from a culture, plus an individual English oral and written presentation that compares examples across cultures and the United States.

In the summer hybrid format, we meet in person for seven high impact topic sessions, then continue with lively, supportive synchronous online meetings that model real college seminars and help you get comfortable speaking up with confidence.
