Congratulations to Addison Brady for being selected as the Burgettstown High School nominee for the Amelia Earhart Service Award from the Zonta Club of Washington County. The award is offered to each of the 15 Washington County schools. A nominee must be a young woman in her junior year whose commitment to community service is noteworthy and an integral part of her character and personality. According to the Zonta Club, the nominee should demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities and a strong core sense of values. Addison has a chance to win a $2000 or $1000 award from the Zonta Club for her commitment to community service. Good Luck, Addison!

Taking Time to Address Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) at BMHS

Continuing with our effort at addressing students' social-emotional wellbeing, this week we had a featured speaker at the middle/high school. David Flood is a nationally known motivational speaker, and on Thursday, he conducted two presentations on Dignity & Repect; one for the middle school students and one for the high school students.

From Mr. Flood's website (davidjflood.com) :

DIGNITY & RESPECT – “LOOK ON THE INSIDE”

David Flood’s Youth Motivational Programs benefit from his experience as a hospice volunteer and work with special needs children, including his son. These two things enable him to speak about human dignity and respect like no other youth motivational speaker in the industry. He is a highly skilled youth speaker; capturing the children’s attention with appropriate humor, identifying the issues that they are dealing with, and guiding them through both ways to address a situation that they find themselves in, or see another person experiencing.

Whether David is speaking to elementary students, middle school students, or high school students, his humor and stories are age-appropriate. He understands how to relate to students on their level, regardless of their age or social status.

David’s elementary, middle, and high school assemblies focus on students’ attitudes and the choices that they make every day. David connects with his audiences on an emotional level and there is always a line of students waiting to speak with him when he finishes. Both students in middle school and high school who attend his assembly program find something in his story that they can relate to. His message covers dignity, respect, compassion, inclusion, character, attitude, tolerance, understanding, leadership, and core values.

David feels to be a leader you need not avoid situations, but rather address it, whether it is happening to you or someone else. He reinforces this approach by giving the students social assignments and challenges. Schools are then given the choice of having him follow up with the students in the lunchroom and classrooms later in the day or with a short video message a few days after his assembly. His unique program works with both middle school and high school students challenging them as they progress through these formative years. It is a program that addresses the issues each student in each grade is dealing with, refocusing them on the importance of dignity, respect, and compassion. Students will leave with a “call to action”….to reach, to respect, and to do.

3 Concepts Students Will Come Away With:

  • We are all alike, on the inside.

  • Show respect for adults, especially teachers.

  • No one eats alone, meet someone new today.

A reminder...

We remind students, employees, parents, guardians, and community members that smoking, the possession or use of alcohol or other drugs, and the possession of weapons on school grounds, including outdoor athletic areas, by any individual, is prohibited. These acts are subject to police action and must also be reported to the Department of Education.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO ENTER A SCHOOL BUS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION

Student and employee safety is extremely important to us. We are constantly looking for ways to make our schools, school grounds, and property safe for all. Recently, we ordered signage that will be placed on all of our school busses, warning that unauthorized boarding will be subject to criminal prosecution. This is not something new, it is simply something we are creating a greater awareness of.

According to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code:

§ 5517. Unauthorized school bus entry. (a) Offense defined.--A person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official with intent to commit a crime or disrupt or interfere with the driver or a person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official who refuses to disembark after being ordered to do so by the driver commits a misdemeanor of the third degree. (b) Notice.--A school district may place a notice at the entrance of the school bus that warns against unauthorized entry.

Buildings and Grounds Concern Form

Our school district prides itself on providing the best possible learning environment for our students, and school buildings and other facilities that can be a source of pride for the community. We are constantly monitoring the conditions of our schools, athletic complexes and other district-owned property but sometimes we miss things. You can help us by completing this form when you notice something that you think needs our attention. It can be something as basic as noticing that there is a light out in our parking areas, or that the trash receptacles at the baseball field need emptied. Just like you have for your home, we have a running list of items that need our attention. These items get prioritized and acted upon. We may already know about the issue you raise, but if we don't, we can't prioritize it until we do. We are all in this together and your input is greatly appreciated.
