Spotlight on PLC
Students who have warm-demanders as teachers don’t just make “normal” progress, but accelerated growth. This is what we want for our students. This type of teaching is what they need from us.
What do warm-demanders have in common?
These teachers are consistent and steady with students.
They notice and respond to learning and struggle.
They respond with feedback
They seek to build, maintain, and repair relationships.
High-expectations teaching is a cornerstone of being a warm-demander in the classroom. To become a warm-demander, you must have high expectations for your students and provide high support (instructional scaffolding) to your students as well. We will provide ideas and resources for instructional scaffolding throughout the year, but let’s keep with the topic of high-expectations.
High expectations are necessary in the classroom to support student growth and achievement. Are your teaching practices reflecting high expectations? Use these questions as an opportunity to reflect with your PLT.
How often does your team:
Ask open questions?
Rephrase questions when answers are incorrect as opposed to rephrasing student answers?
Use mixed-ability groupings?
Work with students to set individual goals?
Link achievement to motivation, effort, and goal setting instead of just "smarts"?
Make explicit learning intentions and success criteria (Learning Targets!)?
Give specific instructional feedback?
Work with all students equally?
Differentiate the tasks, not the content? - we want all students exposed to grade-level material
Those are a few points of a much longer list. Just like our students, we must continue to learn, grow, and evolve in our craft. Pick one or more of the above high-expectation teaching moves and commit to incorporating it. Have fun with it! Measure if it works! Share your successes and struggles! High expectations and action research can lead to greater job satisfaction and learning for us, and accelerated growth for our students.

WMS i-Ready Data
Below is a snapshot of some i-Ready instructional data from the whole school
Upper left is the percentage of lessons passed as a school by subject. Alerts will show up in the i-Ready dashboard if a student is not passing the same lesson topic multiple times.
Lower left is the total time and lessons passed as a school so far this school year, let’s see how big we can get them this year (could be fun to show your homeroom)!
Right side is a quick graph of how many students met their minutes goal for a previous week (i-Ready sees the best growth if students are above 30 minutes per subject per week). These percentages were calculated in a new way to more accurately reflect the percentage of students meeting goal minutes.

Continuing to go Backward - By Design
This week I have two resources for you. The first is a good article from one of my favorites, The Cult of Pedagogy. This article focuses on the basics of the Backward by Design process and provides a nice layout of why this approach is best for student learning and the ability to acquire skills that are transferable (the ultimate goal). Here is the link:
Backward by Design The Basics
https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/backward-design-basics/
The second is a resource for using the process for planning assessments in this manner. If anything, there are some really useful questions for your PLT to chew on when crafting common assessments.
More to come next week.
