Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

This is our first full week of the 2025-2026 school year and our students, teachers, principals, and staff are getting into the daily routines of the school day, academics, and activities. Monday was also the first day of school for all of our kindergarten students. It’s always wonderful to welcome our youngest learners to Pell and below are some cute pictures from their first day of kindergarten.

Recently Governor Dan McKee and Education Commissioner Angelica Infante Green held a meeting at the State House to celebrate that Rhode Island has reduced chronic absenteeism for the third consecutive year. All Newport Public Schools have also seen improvements in attendance and decreases in chronic absenteeism over the last three school years. Great job everyone! That’s a big deal because if our students aren’t in the classroom, they’re not learning. So let’s keep the momentum going as a One Newport community and once again commit to Attendance Matters, Every Day! Parents, Guardians, and Caretakers- We need you on our team reinforcing this at home and ensuring that your child comes to school. You make the biggest difference in whether our children are in school. We need to work together to set expectations with our children that school matters now and for their futures. Join all of us to make this happen.

How do you improve student attendance? Improving attendance is all about building strong school day routines including a regular bedtime, wake up time, time to head out for the school bus, and a time after school to talk with your child about their day. Setting expectations now is important.

If your child is experiencing any issues or concerns in school, please reach out to your child’s teacher or the building principal. The sooner communication starts the better, and the sooner our teachers and principals can work with you and your child on a plan that positions them for success.

What else is new? This year students are not allowed to use their cell phones in Newport Public Schools during school hours. This is a big change, but we are already receiving lots of positive feedback and our students are doing a great job following this new rule. BRAVO!!

Last Update for this week -Traffic Control at RHS:

Rogers parents and students should read the important message below about drop off, pickup, and student parking. With limited parking and space while demolition of the old Rogers continues, we all need to work together to follow these procedures so that we don’t create traffic jams and unsafe conditions at the start and end of school days.

Have a great week of learning everyone and remember that when Attendance Matters, Success Follows for our students, less use of cell phones means more focused attention to school and instruction- and let’s be safe when driving!

Rogers High School Drop-Off, Pick-Up , and Student Parking Rogers High School Drop-Off, Pick-Up , and Student Parking

As we begin the school year in our new Rogers, we want to ensure that student arrival and dismissal runs smoothly and safely. Please carefully review the updated procedures for parent drop-off and pick-up:

Entrance & Route

  • Parents should approach the school via Brenton Road → Wickham Road → West Lot to avoid traffic and long waits.

  • Do not travel from Old Fort Road to Wickham Road, as this route will conflict with bus traffic.

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Area

  • All drop-offs and pick-ups must take place along the curb closest to the school building in the West Lot.

  • Please do not park in the spaces within the lot. This is our limited staff parking area.

  • After dropping off or picking up your student, parents must loop through the parking lot and exit the West Lot promptly.

Student Parking

  • Absolutely no students may park in the West Lot, which is reserved for faculty and staff only.

  • Students may park in the bus loop or along the north side of Wickham Road, where ample parking is available.

We appreciate your cooperation in following these procedures. By doing so, you help us maintain a safe and efficient flow of traffic for everyone on campus.

Grade 5 Decision Regarding Pell Elementary School Grade 5 Decision Regarding Pell Elementary School

A workgroup on Grade 5 moving to Pell Elementary consisting of building leaders, interested NSC members, parents, teachers and administration will be put together to gather input and study the logistics of moving grade 5 to Pell. At last night’s school committee meeting, the NSC decided to put a working group together to bring ideas/comments/feedback back to the full NSC to decide whether Grade 5 should be put at Pell Elementary School, beginning in September of 2026. We are hoping to have a final decision by this December on whether or not the move will happen. Stay tuned for more updates and please feel free to share your thoughts and comments now and throughout the coming months. Thank you to the parents and teachers that have already sent emails and information.
