Breaking Boundaries Club Breaking Boundaries Club

The Breaking Boundaries Club from Marshfield High School came to visit first grade. They shared a super inspiring children’s book all about perseverance, and even played a fun game to help us practice not giving up!

What made it extra special? All five of the visiting students are South River School alumni! Our halls were filled with smiles as we welcomed them back to the place where their learning journeys began.

A buddy bench is a special bench on a school playground where a student can sit to signal they are feeling lonely, want to make a new friend, or would like someone to play with. It's a tool to promote inclusion and kindness, as other children are encouraged to approach the person on the bench to ask them to play or simply talk to them. This simple concept helps prevent social isolation and ensures all students have a way to connect with others.

How it works

  • A child can sit on the bench when they are by themselves during recess.

  • Other students see the child on the bench and are taught to recognize it as a sign that the person wants company.

  • A student who sees someone on the bench can then invite them to play or join them.

  • The bench can also serve as a place of refuge for children who are feeling sad or are lonely, and as a place to find support from their peers.

Benefits

  • Reduces loneliness: It gives children a way to ask for help without having to say it out loud.

  • Promotes inclusion: It encourages students to be empathetic and to reach out to others.

  • Fosters friendship: It creates a safe and structured environment for children to make new friends and build social skills.

From the Nurse From the Nurse

Fall is here, and so is the colder weather!

Please send your child to school with layers of clothing. The weather is getting colder at recess and the building can be warm. Now is a good time to pack a hat and gloves in your child’s backpack to have as an option throughout the fall / winter. We try to hold recess outside as much as possible.

Coat donations

If you have a gently used winter coat that your child has outgrown and you would like to donate to the school, it would be greatly appreciated. We keep a rack of coats available for children to borrow if they forget their coat from home. Please wash before sending. Thank you in advance!

Chapped Lips

With the colder temperatures comes chapped lips. Chapstick / lip balm can be sent in with your child to be kept in their desk or backpack. Please write your child’s initials on the chapstick with a marker. And please remember to send your child with a refillable water bottle every day and encourage hydration to help prevent chapped lips and dry skin with the changing weather.

Please always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Have a wonderful weekend.
