BOLD Referendum Milestones & Next Steps

Dear Families and Community Members,

Summer may be over, but referendum work continues as planned for both of our facilities and some key milestones have been reached.

At Olivia, we completed the interior prep work for the big remodel next summer, the exterior work with the track and field improvements and the Elementary School playground were completed. The playground has all new equipment, a rubberized play surface, and a gaga ball pit that can fit a whole classroom!

A ribbon cutting was held on September 27 that marked the official opening of the playground, as well as a thank you to all those who helped make this happen. Students and staff were thrilled to get out and enjoy the new playground.

September also kicked off project bidding, and most of the contracts for remodel scopes (both buildings) and building envelope work at Olivia have been awarded. Due to contract issues, there are four items being rebid. These four will have a public bid opening on October 22, 2024 in the district office with board approval in the following weeks.

We have also received permit approval for the building envelope. This scope of work includes repairs to the pool wall, interior and exterior, along with window replacements for the south wing of the school. The larger remodel permits for both Olivia and Bird Island are pending comment from the State and release of the permits. Once these permits have been released, we will be able to start breaking ground on Olivia’s NEW addition. However, this doesn’t mean work can’t be done! Site excavation work and tree removal will be beginning soon, this will help to start footings once the permits are released.

Overall, significant progress continues to be made in preparing the facilities for the next phases -- starting this fall with the new addition, this winter with the district office changing to classrooms, and in Summer 2025 the demolition and remodel work.

We look forward to sharing more updates as construction work gets underway. Stay tuned for more news and visit BOLD.ReferendumFacts.org for the latest updates!

Fall into Winter

There is always a lot of excitement around the Elementary School. Students are settling into the school year and teachers are making this a great place for students to be.

Our PBIS program is meant to showcase the positives that students are doing. We have a lot of fun with trophies and awards. In the classroom, students are working to show their best...to be respectful and responsible. They do this by helping others, by coming to class prepared, and by putting their best foot forward. In the cafeteria, students are showing kindness and respect by saying please and thank you, as well as keeping their area clean. At recess, students are being respectful and responsibility to themselves by coming dressed appropriately for the weather. They are showing respect and kindness to others by helping in times of need, asking others to join them, and keeping our new playground looking great.

We will be bringing back Family Time. This will be an opportunity for family members and friends to come into the school and hear about all the wonderful things that are taking place here. There will be a time to showcase the many talents of our students!

As the weather starts to turn colder, please remember that our elementary (PK-6) grade students go outside everyday. We want to make sure that they are dressed appropriately. If the temperature is below zero (taking into account the windchill, as well), students will stay inside. Sometimes it is too cold for morning recess, but it warms up around noon. Please make sure your child comes with all of their winter gear. If you need to help in order to provide these items, please reach out! We want to help!

Lastly, I want to thank you for your continued support as I continue to learn all the ins and outs of the BOLD District. I appreciate your understanding and patience. Together, we are creating a learning environment where every student feels safe, welcomed, and motivated to achieve their best.

Always,

Mrs. Krafka

Greetings, BOLD Families!

As I write this, we’re already well into our third week of the second quarter. It may sound cliché, but time really is flying by. Thanksgiving break is just a few weeks away, and not long after, we’ll have our two-week holiday break. Since we started school earlier this year, the first semester will end on December 20 instead of January as usual. While this shift may add some academic pressure before the holidays, completing the semester before the break should allow everyone a less stressful holiday season and a fresh start in the new year.

Reflecting on our first few months together, we’ve already wrapped up the fall activities season, celebrated Homecoming, closed out the first quarter, and enjoyed MEA break. As we transition—not only from fall to winter activities and from the first to the second quarter, but also through the literal change of seasons—I’m mindful of the challenges winter can bring. While I do appreciate the occasional snow day (who in education doesn’t?), the shorter, colder days can impact mental health for both students and adults. If you notice your student struggling during this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out; we have staff and resources ready to support them.

In the coming months, I encourage you to engage with your students about their school experiences. We recently completed a student survey aimed at helping staff understand how BOLD students perceive safety, connectedness, academic progress, and classroom experiences. Our staff will use these insights to enhance student engagement, refine teaching practices, and improve our school environment. We’re excited to dig into this data and get to work. If you have any questions about the survey or anything else, please reach out.

Sincerely,

Melissa Hoffman Bodin

From the Senior Class President!

Warriors, welcome back to BOLD high school for another great year! As we all continue along

our academic journeys it is crucial that we treat others with respect so that we can all thrive in a

positive and healthy environment. Each day that we walk into our school we should look at our

day as an opportunity. Each day is a new opportunity to do something great, something special,

something meaningful. Making each day a productive day is a good attitude to have. Making

goals and accomplishing those goals is also a good way of conducting our daily lives. As we get

deeper into our school year I encourage all students to get involved, get involved in whatever

interests you. Whether it be athletics, arts, or school organizations. Get involved and meet new

people and make new memories and build new relationships. We all should look at ourselves as

a team, students and staff working towards the common goal in the pursuit of knowledge and

learning. Get outside of your comfort zone and take the opportunity to have new experiences.

Always know that the staff has your back and the students are on your team.

-Owen Flann
