Red Jacket Middle School
Some thoughts for the starting school year

March 2026
Principal's Message
Our Family Matters Night was a tremendous success! It was wonderful to see so many families come together, enjoy the evening, and connect as a school community. Thank you to everyone who donated raffle baskets—the excitement during the drawings is always a highlight! I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to our PTSA for their incredible work in organizing this event, as well as to the many school and community volunteers who helped make the evening possible. Your support truly makes a difference.
As we head into spring break, I hope you are able to enjoy meaningful time with your families. This is a great opportunity for students to relax, recharge, and spend time outdoors. Access to fresh air, sunlight, and nature plays an important role in supporting students’ overall well-being, and we are fortunate to have so many opportunities in our community to enjoy the outdoors.
Wishing all of our families a safe, restful, and enjoyable spring break!
Sincerely,
Terry Febrey
RJMS Principal
Classroom Update
Our students and staff continue to work hard toward improving their STAR assessment and state test performance. This year, students set a goal to improve their scores by 10%, and we are already seeing encouraging progress. January STAR assessment results showed strong growth from September, with some students already reaching their 10% goal. Their dedication and effort are truly paying off.
State testing is scheduled as follows:
ELA (Grades 6–8): April 21–22
Math (Grades 6–8): May 5–6
Earlier this year, we shared schoolwide and grade-level assessment data with students during an assembly. This was the first time we presented this group information in this way, and it helped students better understand the importance of these assessments. Many students felt motivated and inspired to set and reach their goals.
We also want families to be aware that student participation is important. When students do not take the exam, it impacts our overall school performance. We encourage all students to participate and do their best on these assessments.
School Highlights
We had a wonderful turnout for our annual Spelling Bee! Congratulations to our second-place finisher, 6th grader Grant Simmons. Grant went on to represent our school at the regional competition and earned an impressive 10th-place finish. We are proud of his effort and the way he represented our school community.
Our 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. is scheduled for April 29–May 1. We appreciate the communication that has been shared to help families prepare. Best wishes to all of our students who will be attending—we hope for great weather and an unforgettable experience! Thank you to our staff members who are generously volunteering their time to support this trip.
Guest Speaker Jessie Funk Visits Middle School
This month, our middle school students welcomed guest speaker Jessie Funk, who delivered an engaging and high-energy presentation titled “It’s All About Choices.” Through music, storytelling, and student participation, she shared a positive message about how the choices we make can shape our lives from ordinary to extraordinary. Jessie also emphasized the importance of how we treat one another, encouraging students to lead with kindness and respect. Several students even had the opportunity to join her on stage, making the experience both memorable and impactful for all.
Principal’s Closing Message
This time of year can be especially busy, and like many schools, we have certainly felt the impact of illness this month. I want to thank our students, staff, and families for their resilience, flexibility, and support for one another. It is during times like these that the strength of our school community truly stands out.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back after break, refreshed and ready for a strong finish to the school year.
