If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

In Irish folklore, the rainbow was a signal of hope & goals to be achieved. How it’s better known, is as the hiding place for the leprechaun's pot of gold. However, leprechauns are cunning creatures that, even if you do manage to capture one, will use their sly minds to escape your grasp, and, with them goes any hope of getting their coveted treasures. Now, leprechauns, rainbows, & pots of gold that have never been seen are icons of Ireland.

Affordable Housing

We hear the words 'affordable housing' in so many ways, it raises the question - "What is AH? HUD defines AH as housing where the occupant is paying 30% or less of their gross income on total housing, including utilities. This discussion is intended to be a conversation starter - What are the challenges for AH?

  1. Supply and Demand Imbalance: The demand for AH often exceeds the available supply. Rapid urbanization & population growth exacerbate this issue.
  2. Cost of Construction: Building AH can be expensive due to land costs, materials, and labor. Balancing affordability with quality construction is a challenge.
  3. Gentrification: As neighborhoods improve, property values rise, displacing low-income residents. Gentrification can reduce affordable housing options.
  4. Maintenance/Upkeep: AH projects require ongoing maintenance. Funding constraints can lead to neglected properties.
  5. NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) Opposition: Communities sometimes resist AH projects due to concerns about property values, traffic, or aesthetics.
  6. Lack of Funding: Public funding for AH is often insufficient. Private investment may not prioritize affordability.

  7. Social Stigma: Some people associate AH with crime or lower quality, perpetuating negative stereotypes.

  8. Homelessness: Lack of AH contributes to homelessness. Providing stable housing is crucial for addressing this issue.

  9. Affordability Metrics: Defining affordability varies by location & income levels. Striking the right balance is challenging.

Efforts to address these challenges involve collaboration among policymakers, developers, nonprofits, & communities to create sustainable solutions. 🏠 Visit Housing | MARC to learn more about housing trends in the metro area including Excelsior Springs.
