Classroom Placements

This is the time of year where our staff will begin the process of student/teacher assignments for the 2024– 2025 school year. The entire staff plays a role in this process, as we work to place each of the children into the very best setting. We consider learning styles, student personalities, girl/boy ratio, class size, and student academic strengths and needs, all while striving for a heterogeneous class make-up (full range of abilities).

If you would like to share something about your child’s learning style or personality that would help us with this placement process, please submit your letter to Mrs. Rothermel no later than April 26th, 2024. We trust that you will rely on our professional judgment, as we group each of the children with the idea of creating the best learning environment possible for everyone. With that being said, requesting particular teachers will not be accepted.

Classroom Relocation Information

As you know, part of your student’s growth and development involves learning and practicing important social-emotional skills (such as using effective communication skills and learning to cope when feeling upset or frustrated).

There are times when students may struggle to demonstrate these skills during the school day, and when they may need additional support from adults in order to help them engage with others and with the activity at hand. This support might involve transitioning the class to another location (i.e., learning hub, alternate classroom) to continue their learning while the student who is struggling receives additional help from staff.

Previously, we have communicated directly with parents/guardians of those learners most impacted by a student struggling to demonstrate social-emotional skills (for example, if a student was upset following a disruption in the classroom). Moving forward, we will be sharing with the entire class following substantial incidents of disruption - so that all families have this information for their reference (and so that they can speak to their student at home, should they wish). Families can expect this information to be sent via email, and we will make every effort to send these communications before the end of the school day.

It should also be noted that there are several other circumstances in which a classroom may relocate during the day (for example, if there is a student who becomes ill in the classroom and clean-up is needed). During these instances, families would not necessarily receive communication - apart from more unusual circumstances.

Thank you for your understanding, as we work to help all learners achieve their own personal excellence here at Spencer Loomis. Please do not hesitate to reach with any additional questions you may have.
