What is Dix Street PRIDE?
From Mrs. Katie: Helping Children Cope With Routine Changes Over Breaks
School breaks can be exciting for children, but the changes in routine—like later bedtimes, different schedules, or less structured days—can sometimes lead to stress or frustration. As parents, you can help your child navigate these transitions with a few simple strategies.
Tips for Supporting Your Child
Keep some routines consistent: Bedtime, wake-up time, and mealtimes can stay similar to school days to provide stability.
Plan structured activities: Include quiet time, reading, outdoor play, and creative projects to give predictability to the day.
Talk about feelings: Encourage your child to express excitement, worry, or disappointment about the break or returning to school.
Practice calming strategies: Deep breathing, stretching, or mindfulness exercises can help children stay grounded.
Gradually ease transitions: A few days before school resumes, adjust sleep and daily schedules closer to the school routine.
Why This Helps
Keeping some structure while allowing flexibility reduces stress and helps children feel secure, making the transition back to school smoother and more positive.
