Our Learning Community...

This week, our school community proudly celebrated Kindness Week! Throughout the week, students and staff focused on noticing and naming the acts of kindness happening all around us, helping a friend, using kind words, including others, and showing empathy. By highlighting these moments, we not only reinforce positive behavior, but we also inspire one another to spread even more kindness throughout our school and greater community.

February marks the beginning of Black History Month. Throughout the month, classrooms will be learning about influential Black leaders and innovators who have made meaningful contributions to our country and the world. Students will explore themes of activism, leadership, and perseverance, learning how individuals used their voices, talents, and actions to stand up for justice and create positive change. These lessons encourage our students to see themselves as leaders and change makers who can make a difference in their own communities and beyond.

Looking ahead, next week is a busy one with many activities and events for families. Please be sure to review the Looking Ahead section of this newsletter below, as well as the flyers, for important dates and details.

Black History Month Black History Month

Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!

Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.

Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.

Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:

  • Choose a cozy time and space to read together

  • Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)

  • Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension

  • Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby

The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...

2026 Black History Month

Understanding Black history is integral to understanding the history, issues, and the future of our country. One of the founding documents of this country, the United States Declaration of Independence, held that "all men are created equal." However, the long history and the impacts of enslavement, segregation, and redlining are still felt today. Each February, San Diego Public Library honors Black history, celebrates culture and community, and recognizes the achievements as well as the ongoing struggles of Black Americans. In celebration of Black History Month, the Library hosts various thought provoking programs and provides an opportunity for students to participate in a creative works contest.Quick links:Black History Month ContestFeatured ProgramsStory Times and CraftsLecture and DiscussionFilm ScreeningGeneral InterestArt & DisplayVideoResourcesBooklists Black History Month Contest Black History Month ContestShowcase your talents and creativity by submitting an essay, poem, visual artwork, song, rap, or other creative work that represents a Black American historical figure or an event in Black American history that has shaped the world. All participants receive a free gift!
