SENIORS: Virtual FAFSA Workshop Oct. 28th SENIORS: Virtual FAFSA Workshop Oct. 28th

Oakland University will host its annual Virtual FAFSA Workshop for the Class of 2027 on Wednesday, October 28, from 8:00–9:00 p.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity for high school seniors and their families to receive professional assistance with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

During this one-hour virtual session, students and families can work at their own pace while having the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance throughout the process.

FAFSA Preparation Checklist

To make the most of the workshop, students and parents should have the following information available, as applicable:

  • FSA IDs: StudentAid.gov account login information for the student and, if required, the parent. Each person must have their own account.
  • Social Security numbers: For the student and parent(s), if applicable.
  • Federal tax information: Relevant tax records or access to the IRS Direct Data Exchange.
  • Untaxed income records: Such as child support received, if applicable.

Click here to register for the Virtual FAFSA Workshop!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Sain.

We encourage all seniors and their families to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to get a head start on the financial aid process!

Important Reminder: Many colleges and universities require students to submit the FAFSA to be considered for certain types of institutional financial aid, including need-based grants and some scholarships. Completing the FAFSA can help ensure students don't miss out on potential financial aid opportunities. Be sure to check each institution's specific financial aid and scholarship requirements.

🆕 Ohio Wesleyan University Open House 🆕 Ohio Wesleyan University Open House

Ohio Wesleyan’s Open House is Saturday, November 7 Open House!

Students and families can explore academic programs, meet faculty and current students, tour campus, and experience OWU firsthand.

A great reason for seniors to visit now: Students who complete an official campus visit by December 1 are eligible for OWU’s $1,500-per-year Visit Award. Open House counts!

NOV. 7 OPEN HOUSE DETAILS + REGISTRATION

There’s a lot of momentum at OWU:

  • Enrollment is at its highest level in more than a decade.

  • Our new Conrades School of Engineering, backed by $17 million in alumni philanthropy, is recruiting its first mechanical engineering class for fall 2027.

We welcome you to our campus!

October is College Application Month October is College Application Month

Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid.

Finalize your list

Most students should consider applying to 5-8 colleges according to the CollegeBoard. When making a final list, students should consider academic interest, campus culture, location, and athletics, among other things. Which universities will challenge them and keep them engaged over the next four years? Tools like SCOIR, Big Future, and Niche help students identify colleges that best fit them. High school counselors are excellent resources for guidance as well.

Keep in mind that most universities charge an application fee. However, some students may be eligible for a fee waiver, and some universities are offering free applications to all students during College Application Month. Check out CollegeBoard's Big Future site for more information about potential fee waivers.

There are ways to pay

School cost is a genuine concern for students, but there are many ways to get financial aid to help pay for college. The FAFSA is the federal application for student aid. Students should complete this as soon as possible because the amount they can receive from the federal government increases the earlier they apply. Students can apply for and receive scholarships based on many things: interests, demographics, athletics, and academics. Scholarships can be found by checking a college’s financial aid page, CollegeBoard, and sites like BigFuture, Scholarships.com and Fastweb. By maximizing financial aid, a family can significantly reduce the cost of attending college.

Look for the school's freshman admissions page

College admissions departments receive a lot of questions from students, and they make an effort to answer common questions available on their website for new applicants. These freshman admissions pages are an excellent resource for applicants to get information about requirements, scholarship/financial aid information, application steps, and more. For example, here are the pages from the University of Michigan, and Oakland Community College.

When reviewing the requirements, check for information about SAT/ACT testing. Many colleges across the country are test optional and do not require students to submit scores with their application. Also, check if the application will have an accompanying essay, and begin thinking about how to respond. Some universities use the Common App questions, while others may have their own.

Sites like CollegeEssayGuy and CollegeBoard's Big Future have many resources to help with writing a great college application essay.

Student Athletes

Student-athletes planning to play their sport while in college have some special considerations. By now, student-athletes should have their free profiles made through the NCAA eligibility center website. The NCAA has numerous resources and checklists to help students stay on top of their unique requirements.

Not a Senior?

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors can still participate in college application month. They can use this time to refine their list of colleges, learn about admissions requirements, take live or virtual campus tours, and much more. This month is an excellent reminder that it pays to be prepared. Proactive underclassmen will be much better informed and less stressed when it is their turn to apply in the coming years. The information learned now will help students finalize their college list and prepare information for their application. Juniors can also start applying for scholarships!

Communicate

As with most things in life, communication is key. Students should speak with their high school counselors and admission counselors at universities to ensure they understand the different parts of the application process and get answers to their questions. High school counselors have a wealth of information and resources to support seniors in their applications. If the freshman admission page of your college/program doesn't answer a question, the admission counselors will be happy to provide more information.

It is not too late to start planning and applying to your postsecondary program! So research some schools, finalize your list, and apply confidently!

🎓 2027–28 FAFSA Form Now Available 🎓 2027–28 FAFSA Form Now Available

2027–28 FAFSA: What Seniors and Families Need to Know

The 2027–28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) will be available by October 1, 2026. Students planning to attend college, career school, or another eligible postsecondary program beginning Fall 2027 should complete the FAFSA to apply for federal, state, and school-based financial aid.

Don’t wait! Some financial aid programs have limited funding or priority deadlines, so completing the FAFSA as early as possible is encouraged.

📅 Important Dates

  • FAFSA opens: October 1, 2026

  • Federal deadline: June 30, 2028

  • State deadlines: May be earlier than the federal deadline

  • College deadlines: Vary by school and may be earlier than the federal deadline

Families should check their state and each college's financial aid deadlines to avoid missing out on available aid.

✅ Before You Start

Students and required contributors should create their own StudentAid.gov accounts before completing the FAFSA.

Have the following information available:

  • 2025 federal tax information

  • W-2s and other records of 2025 income, if applicable

  • Social Security numbers and other required identification information

  • Records of certain untaxed income

  • Current information about applicable assets and investments

  • A list of colleges, universities, career schools, or trade schools the student is considering

Much of the required federal tax information can be transferred directly from the IRS into the FAFSA.

💰 What Is the FAFSA Used For?

Completing the FAFSA can help determine eligibility for:

  • Federal financial aid

  • Federal Pell Grants

  • Federal student loans

  • Work-study opportunities

  • State financial aid

  • College and university financial aid

The FAFSA information is used to calculate the student's Student Aid Index (SAI), which schools use as part of determining financial aid eligibility.

📩 After You Submit

After the FAFSA is processed, students will receive a FAFSA Submission Summary. Review it carefully to make sure the information is correct.

The colleges listed on the FAFSA will receive the student's information and can use it to determine eligibility for their financial aid programs.

⭐ Important Reminder

Completing the FAFSA does not commit a student to attending any particular college. Students can list up to 20 schools and compare their financial aid offers before making an enrollment decision.

Ready to Get Started?

Visit Federal Student Aid for the official FAFSA application, instructions, and the latest deadline information.

The following resources are available to assist families in completing the FAFSA:

  • How to Create a StudentAid.gov Account Guide: This step-by-step guide is easy to print and share.
  • 2027-28 Preview Presentation: This guide to completing the new online FAFSA form will familiarize you with what’s new and common user scenarios. The presentation can be used as provided at a FAFSA completion event or modified as needed.

🎓 Free College Application Workshops 🎓 Free College Application Workshops

This September, Schoolhouse is offering three free College Admissions Workshops for you to learn directly from current college students and gain practical guidance on the college application journey.

See what one recent learner had to say about her experience with our College Admissions Workshops:

“During the four weeks of of these workshops, I didn’t just attend lectures with generic advice. Above all, I was surrounded by enthusiastic peers sharing the same goal as me, had access to a supportive tutor who’d been through the whole process, and could focus on what felt right for me through the workbook activities and discussions. In the end, applying to college became exciting and fulfilling: a journey towards self-discovery.”

Through Schoolhouse workshops, you will:

  • Learn from current college students from schools such as Harvard, Caltech, UChicago, Yale, and many more. These students have been where you are and can answer any of your questions.
  • Follow a curriculum developed by college experts. Your tutor will guide your group through activities and discussions designed by admissions experts at the Coalition for College.
  • Learn alongside a small group of peers. Each workshop includes no more than 15 students, creating a supportive environment where you can learn from others.

Our September workshops range from two to four weeks and will walk you through creating your college list, writing college essays, and understanding financial aid.

Registration is open from now until August 31! We hope to see you at one (or more!) of our September workshops.

While you can’t actually fly solo until you’re 16, and you can’t get your Private Pilot License until you’re 17, the Junior Aviator Program is an opportunity for 12-to-15-year-olds to learn the language of aviation, get immersed in the flying experience through our full-motion simulator and complete the coursework that will allow them to take the FAA’s written exam even before getting their in-the-air training.

That’s important because there is a two-year window after passing the written exam, during which oral and practical exams need to take place. So getting the written exam done at 15 makes it possible to get the PPL at 17.

The director of our Junior Aviator Program is Berkley’s Lauren Kolar (pictured at right), who was one of the very first students we enrolled here at Victors and has big plans of her own as a future pilot.

If you or a young person you know is between 12 and 15, and would like to sign up for Junior Aviators, go to this link!

due Dec. 1st

Description of Scholarship

The Hagan Scholarship provides $1,000 to help purchase essential items for college, up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters, workshops to learn important life skills not typically covered in the college curriculum, an HSF Schwab Brokerage Account to learn how to invest, and up to $8,000 to study and travel abroad.

Hagan Scholars who graduate while in the Hagan Scholarship Program can apply for a Hagan Graduate Scholarship, good for up to four additional consecutive semesters to attend graduate school or the first two years of a professional program, receiving up to $7,500 each semester.

1. The disbursement amount will be determined each semester by HSF by taking the Total Cost of Attendance including tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, personal and transportation costs; then, deducting the total dollar amount of ALL scholarships, awards, grants, waivers, Federal and Institution provided Work-Study, and one-half of the recipient’s FAFSA SAI. Parents are not required to pay the SAI; it is used only to determine the disbursement amount.

2. The disbursement amount will be adjusted each semester to offset the expiration or loss of other scholarships, awards, grants, waivers, Federal or institution provided work-study, and changes in the recipient’s SAI.

3. The Hagan Scholarship is renewable for up to seven additional consecutive semesters if the recipient fulfills the scholarship criteria and mandatory workshop responsibilities. Funding of the Hagan Scholarship will cease upon graduation from college or after earning 140 credit hours, whichever first occurs. In that event, recipients will continue managing their HSF Schwab Account and fulfill all other scholarship criteria until their Award Year Class graduates from college.
