Message from the Superintendent

Dear Moreno Valley Unified School District Community,

I am honored to share that our Board of Education formally adopted a Land Acknowledgement Statement for our district at its meeting on September 9, 2025. This marks an important step in our collective responsibility to honor the history, culture, and enduring presence of Indigenous peoples in the region our students, families, and many team members call home.

The Land Acknowledgement Statement reads:

The Moreno Valley Unified School District acknowledges that our schools and district sites are situated on the ancestral homelands and traditional territories of Indigenous peoples, including the Cahuilla, the Gabrielino-Tongva, the Luiseño, and the Serrano. We honor their connection to this region and sincerely appreciate the opportunity to educate our students on their traditional homeland. Their continued presence, resilience, and vital contributions remind us of our responsibility to honor and care for this land and its people.

As we move forward, this acknowledgement will be a reminder of the values we hold as a district: inclusivity, respect, and equity. It will serve as an educational tool for our students and a point of reflection for us all as we continue to build learning environments where every student feels a true sense of belonging.

Thank you for joining us in honoring the history of this land and its First Peoples. Together, we move forward in partnership, powered by purpose.

With respect and commitment,

Dr. Alejandro Ruvalcaba
Superintendent of Schools
Moreno Valley Unified School District
