CAREER COACH CORNER
Last week, the Auto Tech program went on a three-stop industry tour, giving students the opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways while learning from experienced professionals in the automotive field.
The first stop was ATI Performance Products, where students got an inside look at the complex manufacturing processes used to produce high-performance engine and transmission components. They saw how modern technology and traditional craftsmanship come together to create top-quality parts and toured the company’s racing shop, where vehicles are built and maintained for competitive events.
The second stop took students to the Central Atlantic Technical Training Center, where they toured the facility and learned about post-CTC training opportunities and career pathways available to aspiring Toyota technicians.
The final stop was Late Model Performance, a specialty automotive customization shop. Students enjoyed seeing unique vehicles, meeting industry professionals, and even witnessing their first 700-horsepower dyno pull! The visit was topped off with pizza and plenty of opportunities to ask questions and gain firsthand insight into a side of the automotive industry many had never experienced before.

From Mixing Bowls to Market Success: How a High School Student's Passion Became a Business
From Mixing Bowls to Market Success: How a High School Student's Passion Became a Business
At just 18, Shelby Querry is proving that big dreams can take shape in a high school classroom. After completing the dual enrollment entrepreneurship program, a baking & pastry program internship, and a statistics course all at once, she’s launched “Shelby’s Bakes,” a homemade bread and dessert business that’s already capturing the attention of the local food scene.
Shelby’s journey began on her family’s small farm, where she developed a love for farm-to-table ingredients. As part of her agribusiness program, she learned about sourcing produce sustainably. Then, her baking & pastry classes taught her the delicate craft of pastry—and it was her statistics course that gave her the tools to analyze demand, pricing, and growth.
“Having the baking program internship, entrepreneurship course, and FCC statistics class all together helped me to understand how to start my own small business,” Shelby says. With support from her CTC instructors, she started taking custom orders for decorative focaccia bread, brownie bread, croutons, cake batter donuts, bagels, English muffins, breakfast sandwiches, and mini-cheesecakes.
This spring Shelby was a featured vendor at the Local Homestead Tulip Festival, and she also sold items at the CTC Greenhouse plant sale. As she balances her senior year with a growing business, Shelby is living proof that a combination of curiosity, education, and hard work can turn a sweet idea into a thriving dream.
In the fall, Shelby will be attending Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island to obtain a degree in Food & Beverage Entrepreneurship on the Baking pathway. Her dream job is to open a cafe that highlights her passion and skills that she’s been honing all along. She is well on her way to having a career as a successful business owner. We can only hope that one day she returns to the Frederick area to open her cafe.
